Base Location: Inverness/ Alness offices and Carnaig 400KV Substation project site near Bonnar Bridge/Lairg

Working Pattern: Permanent | Full Time | Site-Based Role (5 Days per Week)

Salary: £44,000 - £65,900 depending on experience + car / cash allowance + performance-related bonus + range of other benefits to support your family, finances and wellbeing.

The Role

SSEN Transmission has an opportunity for a Site Construction Manager to support the delivery of the Carnaig Substation Project. The successful candidate will ideally have experience in the construction and commissioning of major transmission substations and will be responsible for leading the construction phase of the project, ensuring works are delivered safely, to the required quality standards, in accordance with programme requirements, and in compliance with all statutory and contractual obligations.

Supporting the project through its pre-construction and construction phases, you will act as SSEN Transmission's key site representative, working closely with contractors, suppliers, project teams, operations personnel and stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery. You will play a critical role in driving a positive safety culture, maintaining quality standards and ensuring effective coordination of all site activities. 

You Will

  • Lead and oversee the safe delivery of construction and commissioning activities associated with the Carnaig 400KV Substation Project, including earthworks, civils, buildings, earthing, air-insulated switchgear installation, transformer installation, electrical installation and commissioning works. Working closely with the appointed contractors /Sub Contractors and the SSENT operations team to ensure the works are delivered, in a safe and environmentally responsible manner
  • Act as SSEN Transmission's primary site representative, managing contractor and subcontractor performance to ensure works are delivered safely, to the required quality standards and in accordance with programme requirements.
  • Monitor construction progress, resource levels and key performance indicators (KPIs), supporting NEC contract administration and, where delegated, undertaking NEC Supervisor responsibilities including inspections, quality verification, defect management and assessment of completed works. Maintain accurate project records and reporting, including progress updates, site diaries, testing documentation  and photographic evidence, while promoting a positive, collaborative and safety-focused working environment.
  • Ensure all site activities comply with statutory requirements, planning consents, SHE legislation, CDM Regulations, project specifications and SSEN Transmission procedures.
  • Manage quality assurance processes, including Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), site inspections, defect management and commissioning readiness activities. 

You Have

  • Experience in the construction and commissioning of High Voltage Substations or other major infrastructure projects of similar scale and complexity. Including Experience managing contractors and subcontractors, delivering complex construction activities safely, efficiently and to programme.
  • Strong engineering and construction knowledge, including health and safety legislation and the application of CDM Regulations ideally within a substation construction environment.
  • Experience working with NEC contracts, including contractor performance management, quality assurance processes and ideally previous experience undertaking NEC Supervisor responsibilities.
  • SMSTS 5- day site management qualification or equivalent and have experience in site management of similarly complex works in construction / utilities / electrical installation & commissioning, and ideally an HND, degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline.
  • Strong leadership in challenging environments and ability to cope with conflicting demands,  You will be capable of challenging others, resolving conflicts and planning site activities. And have excellent planning, communication and stakeholder management skills, with competence in Microsoft Office and construction management/document control systems. 

The role requires a full current driving licence due to the requirement to travel to and be on site. During the construction phase you will be expected to be site-based five days per week.
