Through Energy Portfolio Management SSE trades commodities for each business unit – ensuring the Group has the energy supplies it requires to meet the needs of customers; procuring the fuel required by the generation plants and selling the power output from our wind farm, hydro and thermal assets.
Where appropriate, EPM secures value and manages volatility in volume and price through the risk-managed trading of energy-related commodities. EPM also provides energy solutions and services to business energy customers.
With a portfolio of around 4GW of onshore wind, offshore wind and hydro, SSE Renewables strategy is to drive the transition to a net zero world through the world class development, construction and operation of renewable energy assets.
SSE Renewables has the largest offshore wind development pipeline in the UK and Ireland at over 6GW and an onshore wind pipeline across both markets in excess of 1GW, SSE Renewables has strong opportunities for the future.
Powering 3.8 million homes and businesses in communities across central southern England and the north of Scotland, SSEN keeps customers connected whilst developing the flexible electricity network vital to achieving net zero.
SSEN Distribution employs more than 3,500 people, including skilled engineers, customer service teams and future energy experts many of whom live as well as work in the communities they serve.
SSEN Transmission plays a critical role in the transition to a low carbon future, developing, building, maintaining and operating a network for net zero.
From the deep waters of the North Sea to high mountains of the Highlands, the power from onshore and offshore wind farms, hydro power stations and other generation assets is moved across a vast network of underground and sub-sea cables, overhead lines, wooden poles and steel towers to millions across the UK.
We are leading the way in decarbonising gas-fired assets to ensure they’re fit for the future, replacing older, high carbon power stations, which are coming to the end of their life, and providing an alternative to expensive nuclear.
As part of its commitment to a net zero emissions future, the business has a core focus on decarbonising its energy generation and is at the forefront of opportunities in carbon capture, usage and storage (CCS) and hydrogen technology.
