The energy industry is undergoing one of the biggest transformations in its history, and Power System Engineers are at the heart of it.
Our 24 month Power System Engineer Development Programme is designed for ambitious engineers who want to specialise in one of the most exciting and technically challenging areas of the industry. Through structured training, real project experience and rotations across specialist teams, alongside exposure to industry leading facilities such as the National HVDC Centre, you'll develop the skills needed to support the planning, operation and development of the electricity network that will power a low carbon future.
Whether your background is in electrical engineering, electronics, systems engineering or another related discipline, this programme offers a unique opportunity to build specialist expertise while contributing to projects that will have a lasting impact on communities and the energy system for generations to come.
Want to know what it's really like? Read the stories of engineers who have already completed the journey below.
You'll enjoy this programme if you:
You don't need to come from a traditional power systems background. Many of our current Power System Engineers started elsewhere and used this programme to build a new specialism.

Working with us means joining a team of over 14,500 dedicated people who genuinely care. Whether we’re fixing power lines, helping customers, or inventing the energy technologies of tomorrow, we work as a team, look out for one other, and keep each other safe.
There’s a real sense of togetherness at SSE. Inclusion isn’t a buzzword here – it’s how we achieve amazing results while making sure everyone feels heard and supported. Whatever your background, wherever you’ve come from, we’ll listen to your ideas, respect who you are, and make you feel part of our brilliant team.

We have over 350 sites across the UK & Ireland, from bustling city centre offices to mountain-top wind farms in the most remote corners of the land.

We take care of our people with flexible benefits that support their wellbeing, finances, lifestyle, and personal growth.

We trust our teams to know where they do their best work. We work flexibly, so our people can achieve their goals and have time for the other stuff that matters.
“The programme brings together transmission industry knowledge, power systems theory, practical analysis training and visits to key operational sites, giving new engineers a really good grounding for their careers. After more than 27 years in Transmission Planning, I was very happy to pass on my knowledge and experience to a new generation of engineers. Their enthusiasm, motivation and willingness to learn made delivering the training particularly rewarding, and I have no doubt they have the potential to become very successful in their chosen fields.”
