The role

We’re looking for a Senior System Planning Engineer to join our Strategic Energy System Planning Team at SSEN Transmission. This is a key role at the heart of shaping the future of the transmission network. You’ll help identify where and when the grid needs reinforcement and develop forward-thinking regional strategies that ensure a secure and reliable energy supply for the future. As a technical leader, you’ll work with specialist engineers and data modellers to assess network capability against net zero pathways, driving strategic development plans and investment decisions that support the UK’s energy transition.

You will:

- Support and help develop a team of specialist power system engineers and data analytics modellers to continually assess the current and planned regional transmission system capabilities.

- Assess changing short- and long-term network conditions by building and maintaining an electrical market model of the regional transmission systems, undertaking system studies, and ensuring capability to accommodate users’ requirements.

- Collaborate effectively with cross-functional specialists across SSEN Transmission (optioneering, engineering, environment, consent, communities), other network owners, and wider stakeholders to identify credible strategic network reinforcement options and embed whole system thinking in regional network plans.

- Rigorously apply our investment planning methodology and decision-making framework to assess strategic options, develop regional network development plans, and make recommendations for necessary transmission investment in compliance with statutory, regulatory and licence requirements.

- Present study findings to a range of internal and external audiences, and lead the review and production of Investment Cases to support robust and transparent decision making.

You have

- A degree (or equivalent) in a relevant Engineering discipline and ideally be a Chartered Engineer in a relevant institution.

- Demonstrable experience in both power systems analysis and economic analysis, and a working knowledge of regulatory investment techniques, ideally within the transmission industry.

- Working knowledge of the industry technical codes and standards and a good understanding of the statutory and licence obligations under which SSEN Transmission operates.

- The ability to write clear and well-structured investment reports and possess excellent communication skills for presenting information to influence and guide investment decisions.

- Good knowledge of the GB energy industry (and associated interfaces with other companies), including markets and the economics of transmission investment.
