Base Location: Flexible Scotland | We're proud to offer a Flexible First approach to work, and this role is no exception. We will, however, need your base 'home' location to be one of our SSEN offices or depots around Scotland, Perth, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness

Salary: £55,200 - £83,000 + car /car allowance + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

The role

At SSEN Transmission, we're committed to powering the future with sustainable solutions as we work towards achieving Net Zero. As part of our dynamic and forward-thinking team, we are looking for a Principal Engineer - Electrical Plant to lead the way in developing and maintaining cutting-edge electrical infrastructure.

You will

- Write, maintain, review and own technical specifications and guidance notes required for all electrical primary plant (e.g. GIS/GIB, AIS CBs, Disconnectors, Earthing Switches, Instrument Transformers, Surge Arresters, MSCDN, Filters, etc) used on the Transmission network.

- As part of the Technical Authority, review test plans, ensuring all technology and equipment selected is adequately tested, proven and validated. You’ll also review proposed suppliers to confirm their suitability to be approved for use on the transmission network

- Provide Subject Matter Expert input to design reviews carried out by the Design Authority and provide specialist input where required and verify project proposals are fit for purpose and identify any scope changes required.

- Provide technical guidance and advice to the transmission business for new plant and replacement and to Operations regarding equipment capability or fault investigations of failed plant.

- Represent SSEN Transmission at industry body events, working groups and conferences.

You have

- A degree in Electrical Engineering or another relevant engineering discipline and Chartered Engineer status with a relevant institution or working towards chartered status.

- Demonstrable experience on an expert level in the design, specification and application of electrical plant such as AIS or GIS switchgear, instrument transformers or FACTS/HVDC at transmission voltage levels 132 kV and above.

- The ability and experience to technically assess issues and/or problems and critically assess a range of technical solutions and an in depth understanding of the technical requirements for design, planning, operation and development of the transmission network.

- A detailed knowledge and understanding of a range of international standards and transmission network owner specifications, alongside the capability and experience in writing technical specifications, guidance notes and work instructions for plant, equipment or substation design.

- Experience in designing, manufacturing, testing, installation or maintenance of transmission voltage plant and equipment would also be advantageous.
