The role

At SSE, safety is at the heart of everything we do, creating an environment where people feel supported, respected and empowered to do their best work.

You will be joining Power Modelling, part of the Energy Economics (EE) team, which provides an internal economics advisory service to the SSE Group. Power Modelling develops the models that enable the analysis and long-term forecasting underpinning major strategic and investment decisions across SSE.

Whether you're looking to deepen your expertise or bring established technical leadership experience, this is an exciting opportunity to develop innovative modelling capabilities, explore emerging technologies and market developments, and work collaboratively with colleagues across the business to deliver meaningful insight that supports the transition to a net zero energy future.

You will

  • Develop, enhance and maintain long-term power market and power system models that provide robust insights into future power system dynamics, market prices, and asset revenues.

  • Collaborate closely with colleagues across Energy Economics and the wider business to drive advancements in the technical modelling that underpins our investment appraisals, asset valuations and strategic decision-making.

  • Research and deliver new modelling capability suited for evolving systems, market trends and emerging technologies, ensuring Energy Economics’ modelling approaches remain relevant, accurate and forward-looking.

  • Build trusted relationships with internal and external stakeholders, clearly communicating complex modelling in an accessible and engaging way.

  • Contribute to a positive, inclusive and safety-focused team culture, sharing knowledge and supporting the development of colleagues where appropriate.

You have

  • Experience using PLEXOS or similar power market/system modelling software, with the ability to understand model drivers, investigate outcomes and apply sound analytical judgement.

  • Knowledge of wholesale electricity markets and power systems, or transferable experience from a related sector combined with a genuine interest in energy market modelling.

  • Strong commercial acumen with the ability to understand the impact and implications for the business inherent in modelling changes.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly and confidently to a variety of audiences.

  • Experience in areas such as Python, Databricks, data science, or power system analysis (network modelling/ transmission planning) would be advantageous.
