Cable Project Engineering Opportunities

Base Location: For these roles, we require successful applicants to be based from one of our Scottish locations and you'll be expected to spend 50% of your working week in the office - Perth, Glasgow, Inverness or Aberdeen.

Salary: £36,200 - £80,000 + car/car allowance + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

Opportunities are available at the following levels, depending on skills and experience:

• Assistant Engineer: £36,200 - £54,400
• Engineer:  £51,600 - £77,400
• Senior Engineer: £59,800 - £80,000

The roles

SSEN Transmission has exciting opportunities for Assistant Cable Engineers, Cable Engineers and Senior Cable Engineers to join our growing engineering teams.

Whether you're at the beginning of your engineering journey or already an experienced engineer looking for your next challenge, you'll have the opportunity to help deliver the infrastructure that will enable the UK's transition to net zero.

As SSEN Transmission invests billions to upgrade the network and connect renewable generation across the UK, you'll work on some of the country's largest and most ambitious transmission and substation projects, helping to deliver a cleaner, more secure energy future.

Working across a diverse portfolio of transmission and substation projects operating at voltages up to 400kV, you'll contribute to the development and delivery of innovative engineering solutions that will power communities for generations to come.

You will

• Provide cable engineering support across multiple projects by producing or reviewing outline cable system designs during development phases, including review and assessment of technology options, underground cable routing selection, producing current rating calculations using CYMCAP software and assessment of interface requirements.
• Support the project life cycle, including design development, risk sessions such as HAZIDs, HAZCONs, HAZOPs, construction, installation, commissioning, and completion of complex projects. Collaborate with engineers and managers to identify and mitigate engineering and quality risks, support informed decision-making, and conduct peer reviews of key issues.
• Develop technical scopes and specifications for new underground cable projects as well as modifications to existing assets.
• Review cable system prequalification and type testing reports in preparation for SSEN approval, reviewing and verifying contractor/consultant detailed underground cable system designs, witnessing factory and relevant discipline site acceptance testing.
• Promote and manage safety within your assigned projects through the implementation of CDM procedures and best practice, ensuring all engineering activities comply with relevant company, HSE and industry regulations.

You have

• A degree, HND or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, or significant relevant industry experience. Senior Engineers will ideally be a Chartered Engineer in a relevant institution or working towards chartered status.
• You will have demonstrable experience in transmission development, design and specification, with the ability to evaluate engineering challenges and work with others to identify effective technical solutions.
• To be successful in applying for this role, you will have experience working on the Transmission Network and a strong knowledge of High Voltage Cable systems.
• You will have an awareness of the legal and regulatory obligations for Transmission and be proactive in ensuring these are met to the highest standard. This includes a technical understanding of relevant legislation and the implications of this for Transmission network management for both Assets and Projects, including CDM & ESQCR, is essential.
• Strong communication skills are essential, with the ability to present complex technical information clearly and concisely to support decision-making by senior stakeholders. You'll be confident working alongside key stakeholders at all levels, both internally and externally, and building strong, lasting relationships.
