Salary: £50,100 - £75,100 + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

The role

As part of our ongoing growth in Strategic Network Planning, we have an excellent opportunity for a System Planning and Investment Engineer to join the System Optimisation Team. In this role, you’ll be responsible for power system planning to integrate low-carbon generation and related technologies into the North Scotland transmission network.

You will

  • Develop, maintain, and apply optimisation models for the transmission network to assess performance, operability, and constraints, ensuring robustness and traceability in modelling assumptions and outputs.
  • Optimise network topology, energisation sequencing, outage strategies, and constraint management, while supporting studies related to system security, constraint costs, curtailment impacts, and operational limits.
  • Build, update, and validate power system models with industry-standard tools (e.g. PSS®E, DIgSILENT PowerFactory), contributing to continuous improvement of analytical methods and modelling approaches.
  • Utilise data analytics and automation to enhance and support optimisation workflows, enable repeatable analysis. You’ll also help develop digital tools to boost efficiency and support scenario analyses that assess system risk, cost, and resilience.
  • Work with planning, outage, operations, and project teams, as well as external stakeholders (ESO/NESO, DNOs, Transmission Owners, regulators) to optimise activities. Present technical results, assumptions, and trade-offs clearly to diverse audiences, making sure studies comply with codes and standards, and provide clear analysis for audits, regulatory submissions, and assurance processes.

You have

  • Experience working in power system analysis, design and outage planning ideally within the Transmission area.
  • Working knowledge of electrical theory and experience in using power system analysis tools such as PSSE, Power Factory or similar.
  • Good knowledge of the electricity industry, including interfaces with generator and demand customers, the regulator, the Electricity System Operator, other Transmission Owners and Distribution Network Operators.
  • Ability to write clear and well-structured technical reports and network requirements and provide focused information for senior management.
  • Degree (or equivalent experience) in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Mathematics, or a related discipline
