The role

We’re looking for an experienced, adaptable and commercially minded Senior Strategy Manager to lead the development and governance of SSEN Transmission’s 10 Year Business Plan, ensuring decisions are grounded in robust, data‑driven evidence. In this role, you’ll remain agile and prepared to capitalise on emerging opportunities across an evolving energy system, especially as we move into the second period of the 10 Year Business Plan.  You’ll work closely with teams across the business to shape our central 10 Year Plan, steward early stage investment governance, and provide strategic insight to inform enterprise‑level decision making, particularly around future growth opportunities.

You will

  • Contribute to the development and refinement of SSEN Transmission’s strategy by conducting horizon scanning, assessing growth opportunities and analysing system, market and policy developments. Ensure long term plans, governance processes and market insights remain current, accurate and robust.
  • Deliver SWOT, PESTLE, scenario and value chain assessments to inform strategic choices and implementation, working independently or with business units and external experts, and proactively sharing insights that guide decision making across directorates.  Engage internal stakeholders to build constructive relationships and ensure teams understand and can implement the Transmission Strategy.
  • Lead targeted market horizon scanning to support the 10 Year Plan and related System and Investment Plans, assessing trends in policy, regulation, technology, macro-economics and commercial markets.  Synthesise insights into clear implications that feed directly into scenario updates and six-monthly planning processes.
  • Coordinate the implementation of enterprise and directorate strategies by managing engagement, delivery plans and performance measures. Ensure directorate strategies are consistent, well structured, evidence based and aligned to best practice.
  • Maintain awareness of Ofgem frameworks to enable positive regulatory outcomes, support strategic advocacy, and act as a visible champion of SSEN Transmission’s strategic ambition within a collaborative, high-performing team.

You have

  • Strong industry knowledge including SSE’s business areas, the UK energy sector and the transmission industry, with experience applying analytical and organisational techniques within corporate or business environments.
  • Experience supporting strategy formation and delivery, able to synthesise evidence and stakeholder perspectives into clear strategic options and implement them effectively within a complex organisation.
  • Collaborative leadership skills with the ability to lead short life working groups on strategic topics, bring cross-functional teams together, support colleagues in managing competing priorities and consistently deliver high quality outputs.
  • Excellent quantitative and qualitative analytical capability, able to interpret complex datasets, assess strategic opportunities and develop coherent, evidence-based recommendations.  High digital literacy (particularly Excel and PowerPoint) and a practical understanding of business finance and operations.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills tailored to different audiences, along with experience of working confidently with technical, regulatory, financial and engineering specialists.

About SSE
SSE’s purpose is to provide energy needed today while building a better world of energy for tomorrow.
