As SSE continues to grow internationally, Germany represents an exciting and strategically important new market for us. This role offers a unique opportunity to help build SSE’s presence from the ground up, combining the energy and pace of an entrepreneurial environment with the backing, scale, and credibility of a well-established FTSE100 organisation.

We are at an early stage in Germany, with offices in Hamburg actively exploring opportunities across a range of technologies, such as offshore wind, flexible generation and infrastructure, making this a genuinely exciting time to join. The successful individual will play a pivotal role in shaping our reputation, influencing the market, and driving forward projects that will contribute meaningfully to Germany’s energy transition while establishing SSE as a long-term, trusted partner in the market.

Base Location: Hamburg or Berlin, Germany

Salary: Competitive + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

Working Pattern: Permanent | Full Time | Flexible First options available

The role

We’re looking for an experienced and highly strategic Head of Public and Regulatory Affairs to lead SSE’s engagement across the German market at a critical time in our international growth journey. This is a pivotal leadership role, supporting SSE’s long-term investment strategy across offshore wind, onshore renewables, flexible thermal generation, hydrogen, storage and networks.

As Head of Public and Regulatory Affairs Germany, you will lead SSE’s policy, regulatory and external affairs activities, providing expert insight into German and European energy policy, market design and regulatory developments. You will play a key role in shaping market outcomes, influencing policy direction and positioning SSE as a credible and constructive partner in Germany’s energy transition.

Working closely with the Managing Director Germany and senior leadership, you will translate complex policy developments into clear strategic and commercial implications, helping to unlock opportunities and mitigate risks across SSE’s growing portfolio in Germany.

You will

  • Lead SSE Germany’s policy and regulatory strategy across offshore wind, renewables, thermal power, hydrogen, storage and networks.
  • Monitor and analyse German and EU regulatory developments, translating these into commercial insights and strategic recommendations.
  • Shape SSE’s positioning on key market design topics including offshore auction frameworks, capacity mechanisms, electricity market reform, grid access and flexibility markets.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key external stakeholders including federal ministries, regulators, state authorities, TSOs/DSOs, and industry bodies.
  • Represent SSE in regulatory consultations, policy forums, industry groups and energy transition events.

You have

  • Significant experience in energy policy, regulation or corporate affairs within Germany, with a strong understanding of German and European energy systems including renewables, thermal generation, networks, and flexibility markets.
  • Proven track record of engaging and influencing senior stakeholders across government, regulators and industry, with excellent relationship-building and stakeholder management capability.
  • Strong ability to assess, interpret and communicate the commercial impact of regulatory change on infrastructure investment and business strategy.
  • Highly developed analytical and strategic thinking skills, with the ability to operate effectively in complex, fast-evolving regulatory and market environments.
  • Experience producing high-quality consultation responses, policy papers and strategic briefings, with excellent written and verbal communication skills in both German and English.
