As SSE continues to grow internationally, Germany represents an exciting and strategically important new market for us. This role offers a unique opportunity to help build SSE’s presence from the ground up, combining the energy and pace of an entrepreneurial environment with the backing, scale, and credibility of a well-established FTSE100 organisation.

We are at an early stage in Germany, with offices in Hamburg actively exploring opportunities across a range of technologies, such as offshore wind, flexible generation and infrastructure, making this a genuinely exciting time to join. The successful individual will play a pivotal role in shaping our reputation, influencing the market, and driving forward projects that will contribute meaningfully to Germany’s energy transition while establishing SSE as a long-term, trusted partner in the market.

Base Location: Hamburg, Germany

Salary: €Competitive+ performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

Working Pattern: Permanent | Full Time | Flexible First options available

The role

You will lead and build SSE International’s Offshore Wind business in Germany, with overall accountability for the development, growth, and execution of SSE’s German offshore strategy across origination, partnerships, project development, auctions, and market positioning.

You will be instrumental in establishing SSE’s long-term presence in Germany and delivering strategic growth in one of Europe’s most important offshore wind markets. This includes identifying and securing seabed lease opportunities, shaping strategic partnerships, defining transmission and route-to-market strategies, and overseeing the progression of offshore projects from early-stage development through to investment readiness.

You will
  • Build and lead SSE Renewables’ offshore wind business in Germany, establishing a strong local platform and delivering the end-to-end market strategy across seabed lease auctions, project origination, development, and long-term portfolio growth.
  • Lead competitive positioning in German offshore wind auctions, including bid strategy, consortium/JV structuring, partner selection, and route-to-market design (CfD/merchant/PPA), ensuring alignment with German regulatory and grid frameworks.
  • Originate, structure, and progress major offshore wind investments, including full financial business cases (Devex, Capex, returns, risk, financing) through SSE governance and investment committees.
  • Develop and manage senior relationships across the German energy landscape, including federal ministries, regulators (Bundesnetzagentur), TSOs, state authorities (Länder), ports, suppliers, and strategic offtakers/investors.
  • Represent SSE in Germany’s offshore wind ecosystem, building market credibility through industry associations, political engagement, and strategic partnerships while leading a high-performance local team.

You have

  • Significant experience in offshore wind or large-scale energy infrastructure development in Germany or comparable EU/North Sea markets, with strong understanding of German offshore auction systems, permitting, and grid connection processes.
  • Proven track record in delivering offshore wind projects or portfolios in Germany, including successful participation in competitive auctions and/or JV/co-development structures.
  • Strong commercial, financial, and strategic capability, including structuring investment cases and navigating German energy market dynamics (auction pricing, CfD frameworks, merchant exposure, and grid constraints).
  • Established credibility and network within the German energy sector, including regulators, TSOs (e.g. TenneT, 50Hertz), government stakeholders, and industry partners, with proven ability to influence complex stakeholder environments.
  • Demonstrated experience building or scaling energy businesses in Germany or similar regulated European markets, with strong execution focus, entrepreneurial mindset, and ability to operate in a highly regulated, politically sensitive environment.
