The Role

At SSE, we know that our people are our greatest asset. Our Learning & Talent team plays a vital role in helping colleagues develop the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to work safely and successfully across our Distribution business.

We're looking for someone who is passionate about supporting others to grow and who wants to make a meaningful difference through learning and development.

This is a development opportunity, recognising that exceptional Technical Trainers can come from a variety of backgrounds. Whether you've gained experience working across the Distribution Network or within a training role in a safety-critical environment, we'll provide the support, training and encouragement you need to thrive.

As a Technical Trainer, you'll work alongside operational colleagues, helping them build capability, confidence and competence through engaging learning experiences, practical assessments and ongoing support.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Deliver engaging technical training and practical assessments that support the development of operational colleagues and contract partners.

  • Help colleagues build confidence, technical competence and safe working practices.

  • Support the ongoing competence and authorisation of our operational workforce through structured learning and assessment activities.

  • Collaborate with colleagues to continuously improve training materials, ensuring they reflect Operational Safety Rules, procedures and industry best practice.

  • Share your technical expertise by providing guidance, coaching and support on operational procedures.

What the Role is Really Like

This is a varied and rewarding role where you'll have the opportunity to influence both individual development and wider business performance.

You'll remain closely connected to operational teams while helping shape the future capability of the workforce that keeps our network running safely.

The role offers:

  • A blend of classroom-based, practical and workplace learning experiences.

  • A dynamic environment where adaptability and collaboration are valued.

  • The freedom to manage your work, with support from an experienced manager and a welcoming team.

  • The opportunity to positively influence safety, competence and development across the business.

  • Occasional travel across Scotland, with accommodation and travel expenses provided where required.

How We'll Support Your Development

We're passionate about developing the next generation of Technical Trainers, and we'll tailor your learning journey to your individual experience and aspirations.

You'll have opportunities to:

  • Develop your facilitation, coaching and assessment skills.

  • Build your technical expertise across the Distribution business.

  • Progress towards higher operational authorisations, including Senior Authorised Person where appropriate.

  • Learn from experienced trainers and subject matter experts.

  • Build a long-term and rewarding career within Learning & Talent.

What We're Looking For

We're keen to hear from people who can demonstrate one or more of the following:

  • Experience working on or around the Distribution Network, ideally with Category 1-5 Low Voltage Switching authorisations or equivalent operational experience.

  • Experience delivering technical training, coaching, mentoring or assessments within a Distribution or other safety-critical operational environment.

  • Strong technical knowledge combined with the ability to build positive and effective working relationships.

You'll also bring:

  • A strong understanding of safe systems of work and a genuine commitment to creating a safe working environment for others.

  • Excellent communication, facilitation and presentation skills.

  • A passion for sharing knowledge and helping people succeed.

  • Curiosity, adaptability and a willingness to learn and embrace new challenges.

  • An inclusive, supportive approach that enables others to develop and perform at their best.

The following would be advantageous:

  • Higher operational authorisations, including Senior Authorised Person.

  • A Level 3 Award in Education and Training (or equivalent).

  • A recognised safety qualification.

  • Experience creating, reviewing or enhancing technical learning materials.

Why Join Learning & Talent?

This is an opportunity to use your experience in a rewarding new way.

Rather than carrying out the work yourself, you'll empower others with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to work safely and successfully.

In return, you'll benefit from:

  • A culture built on trust, support and collaboration.

  • Investment in your personal and professional development.

  • The opportunity to shape how technical capability is developed across the business.

  • Long-term career opportunities within Learning & Talent and the wider organisation.

  • The satisfaction of making a lasting contribution to the safety, competence and success of our operational workforce.

About the team

You’ll be part of a team of experienced trainers who operate with a high degree of independence while supporting each other to maintain consistent standards. The focus is on delivering practical, high-quality training that reflects the realities of the job, not just theory.
