Kick off your career working in an exciting role where you’ll learn, grow, and make your mark on the future. We’re making big shifts to cleaner, more efficient ways of creating energy and we need the next generation of apprentices and trainees to power the change.
Join SSE as an Apprentice or Trainee Engineer and you’ll earn a salary while you work towards an accredited qualification – one that will set you up for a rewarding career in a thriving industry. Our programmes take around three to four years to complete and we welcome applications from ambitious people from all kinds of backgrounds.
We want to attract the best apprentices to SSE – committed, driven people with the right strengths and attitude. These matter more to us than your school grades or academic qualifications. That’s why there are no minimum grades required for most of our Apprenticeship programmes.
Want to gain practical, hands-on experience while working towards a qualification in engineering?
Become a Trainee Engineer with SSE and you'll be learning on the job whilst studying towards an HNC or HND in Electrical Engineering.
Programmes typically last three years and, just like apprenticeships, you'll earn while you learn.
Be part of a diverse team of over 14,000 dedicated people working in a wide range of exciting roles across our business units and locations.
We have apprenticeship and trainee opportunities available across the UK and Ireland. Where you are based will depend on the opportunity you apply for and and the business unit you'll be working for.
Take a look at the map below to see where our remaining apprenticeship and trainee opportunities are based.
We have a four-stage selection process that helps us both find out if this is the right move for you.
Submit an online application ahead of the vacancy closing date. We’ll ask you to tell us a bit about yourself. It’s that simple.
Next, you will be asked to complete a selection of online tests to help us understand your fit to an Apprentice or Trainee role at SSE. We know you are unlikely to have much (if any) work experience at this stage, so don’t worry – the assessment process focuses on looking at potential and fit for the role you have applied to rather than looking for experience. Specifically, you will be asked to complete an assessment that is behaviour-based (i.e., asks you about what sorts of behaviours are most like you). The assessment also includes an ability component (i.e., focusing on how you work with different kinds of information). If you’d like to get a feel for what’s involved, here are some practice tests. If you need any adjustments to complete these tests, please email us at apprenticesandtrainees@sse.com before you do them and we’ll be happy to help.
If you’re successful in our online test stage, you’ll be progressed to an online video interview. You can do this at a time that suits you best. A video interview is a great opportunity to really sell yourself, but you may feel a little out of your comfort zone. If so, here are some tips:
When you’ve made it through the first three stages, you will be invited to attend an assessment session, which will either be virtual or in person. The assessment is likely to include a group exercise, a presentation, and an interview. You’ll be given plenty of time to prepare, and to inform us of any special adjustments you require.
Good luck!
