SSE Thermal is responsible for the flexible generation subsidiary of SSE plc, focusing on flexible energy generation and storage assets including carbon capture and storage (CCS), hydrogen, energy-from-waste, energy storage and gas generation.
SSE Thermal seeks to become the leading provider of flexible thermal energy in a net zero world. Transforming high-carbon generation assets to low-carbon whilst ensuring a Just Transition for our people.
SSE Thermal's flexible and efficient gas-fired generation will continue to play a critical role in the transition to a net zero future, providing reliable backup power and complementing renewable energy. However, we’ve committed to not constructing any further gas-fired power stations without a clear route to decarbonisation and are actively seeking ways to decarbonise our current assets through cutting-edge solutions such as CCS and hydrogen.

We're looking for students who can bring fresh ideas, new skills and creative thinking, to deliver innovative solutions to help us reach net zero. This is an exciting time to join SSE Thermal and our vision couldn’t be simpler: to be the leading provider of flexible energy in a net zero world.
Our opportunities are open to students who are in the second year of their degree or beyond, as well as those who have already graduated.
We’d love you to have some practical work or project experience that demonstrates your passion for the energy sector, along with clear evidence of your ability to work effectively in a team.
During the placement, you’ll work alongside technology experts to assess emerging low‑carbon technologies, such as hydrogen production, hydrogen‑to‑power, carbon capture and storage, and energy storage, and explore their applications within the power sector. You’ll gain experience evaluating development trends, technology maturity, commercial readiness, risks, and knowledge gaps. This is an excellent opportunity to deepen your technical insight, technical report writing abilities, and presentation skills while contributing to meaningful work at the forefront of the energy transition.
You should be comfortable setting and working towards stretching individual targets, using your own initiative to overcome challenges, and showing a genuine interest in SSE Thermal and the prospect of building a long‑term future with us.
