The roles

We’re looking for two experienced, adaptable and strategically minded Senior Strategy Managers to help shape SSEN Transmission’s long-term direction.  While each role has a distinct focus - one leading our Strategy development and strategic insight, the other leading our 10 Year Business Plan and investment governance — both positions work at the heart of our enterprise-level decision making.

Senior Strategy Manager – Development & Insight

This role leads the development of SSEN Transmission’s enterprise strategy, secures organisation wide buy-in, and ensures our strategic priorities are effectively implemented.  You will work closely with senior colleagues to define the organisation’s direction, support the Transmission Executive Committee (TEC) in identifying priorities, and ensure strategy is translated into meaningful actions and outcomes across all directorates.  You will also lead our market intelligence and strategic foresight function, ensuring SSEN Transmission’s strategy and business plan are informed by robust, relevant and forward looking insight.

Senior Strategy Manager – Investment Planning

This role leads the development and governance of SSEN Transmission’s 10 Year Business Plan, ensuring decisions are grounded in robust, data driven evidence. You will work with teams across the business to shape the central plan, steward early stage investment governance, and provide strategic insight to inform enterprise level decision making, particularly around future growth opportunities.

Whether you’re passionate about defining organisation wide strategic priorities, or about steering long term investment planning and identifying new commercial opportunities, these are high impact roles that influence the future of the GB transmission network.

You will

  • In partnership with subject matter experts, lead the development, integration and ongoing refinement of our long-term strategic direction, whether shaping the enterprise strategy or governing the 10 Year Business Plan.  You’ll ensure scenarios and assumptions reflect system needs, policy and regulatory changes, synthesising strategic, operational and financial intelligence into coherent recommendations approved by senior leadership and the TEC.
  • Coordinate and align strategic inputs across directorates, resolving inconsistencies, ensuring compliance with regulatory guidance, and supporting both early stage investment governance and organisation wide strategic planning.  You’ll evaluate proposals against readiness criteria, assess commercial and operational impacts, and provide rigorous recommendations to decision making bodies.
  • Apply market, policy, regulatory and commercial analysis to assess impacts on strategy and the investment portfolio, identifying implications for our capital programme and strategic priorities.  You will maintain strong external networks, use competitor and scenario analysis, and bring high quality foresight into SSEN Transmission’s strategic direction.
  • Lead the identification and development of new strategic or commercial opportunities, from shaping enterprise level goals to building a pipeline of medium and long term growth options.  You’ll coordinate cross-functional teams, explore new markets, develop evidence based policy positions, and produce high quality papers and presentations for the TEC and Board.
  • Provide leadership and development to a high performing team in a collaborative matrix environment, fostering analytical excellence, strategic curiosity and enterprise wide alignment.  You’ll support the translation of strategy into meaningful actions by setting priorities, monitoring performance, and ensuring strong governance and advocacy both internally and externally.

You have

  • Strong industry knowledge including SSE’s markets, energy economics and SSEN Transmission’s role in the GB energy system, with proven capability in developing and implementing meaningful business strategy, whether organisation wide or investment focused.
  • Experience shaping strategy or investment plans end to end, from problem identification and evidence gathering, through option development and appraisal, to securing organisational buy-in and delivering high quality outputs to time and standard.
  • Strong commercial and analytical capability, able to interpret market, policy, regulatory and macro-trend developments, use structured frameworks to assess strategic risks, and apply sound judgement under uncertainty.   You can convert insight into clear, evidence based recommendations that influence senior stakeholders.
  • Ability to translate high level strategy or long term plans into clear business actions, equipping teams and senior management with the insight needed to make confident, well informed decisions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, able to shape compelling narratives, represent the business externally, and influence decision makers at all levels.
  • Experience leading and developing high performing teams, coaching analytical excellence and enabling effective cross-functional collaboration to embed consistent, enterprise wide alignment.
