The role

Energy Economics, within SSE Energy Markets (EM), acts as the internal economic advisor to the Energy business units of the SSE Group. The Power Modelling team is the centre of expertise for modelling within Energy Economics. Power Modelling supports the other areas of Energy Economics in delivering long-term scenario-based forecasts of power prices and asset revenues. These forecasts are endorsed by SSE's Group Executive Committee for use to support the appraisal of opportunities and the valuation of investments.

This role will have a key responsibility in acting as a technical lead supporting the Power Modelling team. It is an ideal opportunity for a modelling expert to broaden and deepen the long-term Power Fundamentals modelling available to Energy Economics in both GB/ISEM, as well as internationally.

The Senior Power Modeller will research and develop modelling capability for new market needs, technologies, system services and networks, as well as working to package and refine their work into robust toolsets which our colleagues can depend upon to let them provide deeper insight.

You will

- Play a lead role in the development and maintenance of Energy Economics' long-term power market modelling.

- Work closely with Energy Economics colleagues who provide the commercial analytical support required to underpin long-term investment decisions, asset valuations and other strategic decision-making. Ensuring that delivery of our service meets their needs, and incorporating their feedback into the development of the product.

- Research, develop, and maintain long-term fundamental models for a range of power markets and purposes.

- Engage with internal and external stakeholders to ensure modelling approaches and assumptions are up-to-date and appropriate.

- Support junior colleagues in the modelling team in developing their skills. Promote and explain our modelling to wider business colleagues.

You have

- Expert level capability in model development using PLEXOS or similar software – able to understand the drivers of a model, extrapolate impacts, and triage problems.

-Experience modelling wholesale power markets/systems, and revenue modelling of power generation projects. Detailed knowledge of electricity markets (GB, ISEM or similar), or able to demonstrate the applicability of your knowledge of a relevant sector. Consideration will be given to a similar level of demonstrably transferrable experience.

- Good business acumen, and commercial awareness; able to focus on the commercial implications of insights obtained through modelling.

- Excellent communication skills – able to distil down the meaning of complex material and mechanisms into simple clear explanations and useful takeaways suitable for non-expert audiences.

- Experience in Databricks, Python, or computer/data science more generally, would also be beneficial.
