The role

SSEN Transmission is going through a period of unprecedented growth around the critical infrastructure it builds and operates in the North of Scotland - investing at least £22bn in the period until March 2031. Transmission Digital is a key enabler for this growth through the transformation of the underpinning IT and OT services that keep the lights on and allow SSEN Transmission to deliver an expanded 'Network for Net Zero'.

This role will be responsible for leading the Operational Technology (OT) Networks Services function within SSEN Transmission OT. It will own these capabilities end to end – running the critical 24/7 services that underpin our operational assets to keep the lights on in our network area, as well as managing significant volumes of change across our Networks as we modernise them into the RIIO-T3 pricing period to enable the network to scale to meet this huge demand.

You will

  • Act as the technical focal point for the OT Network, generating a detailed understanding of the Network topology (physical and logical), both LAN and WAN. Performing technical deep dive network discovery where fuller understanding is required.
  • Assist in developing a Network strategy as a component of the wider Operational Technology strategy. Engage with our primary suppliers to enable the realisation of the Network strategy.
  • Perform assessment of Network risk. Creating appropriate mitigations within the Network strategy to minimise current and future risk.
  • Work closely with other OT teams including, but not limited to, the Security and Infrastructure teams, ensuring we provide the solution right first time
  • Identify and evaluate new technology which may be beneficial to the Network and projects. Lead the evaluation of new and prospective network technologies, processes, and governance in support of the wider OT team. Lead the design and selection of future platforms, addressing cross-technology and cross-platform issues.

You have

  • Previous experience in Network Management, Operations, and Support, including substantial network design work.
  • Proven ability to design and implement network technologies, such as LAN Switching, WAN, QoS, and network traffic encryption.
  • Solid understanding and hands-on experience with firewalls—Palo Alto preferred, but other platforms considered.
  • Familiarity with telecommunications infrastructure, including fibre optic cabling, MPLS, DWDM and microwave radio.
  • Strong knowledge of network security techniques and mitigations, ideally with insight into industrial control systems; CCNP accreditation or similar is desirable.
