Base Location: For this role, we require successful applicants to be based from one of our Inverness or Aberdeen Offices and you'll be expected to spend a minimum of 50% of your working week in the office or supporting site activities

Salary: £68,100 - £102,100 + car allowance + operations disturbance allowance + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

The role 

As Operations Manager (HVDC/FACTS Control & Protection Systems), you will play a pivotal leadership role in overseeing the safe, reliable and efficient operation of SSEN Transmission’s HVDC and FACTS asset portfolio, guiding a team of highly skilled specialist field engineers focussing on a variety of Control & Protection Systems. 

Reporting to the Head of Operations, you will guide day-to-day operational delivery, fault response, and performance management across a rapidly expanding asset base. You will also act as a key interface with capital delivery programmes, ensuring new infrastructure is designed and handed over with operability, safety and long-term reliability at its core. 

You will 

  • Manage and develop a team of HVDC / FACTS Control & Protection systems specialist engineers, setting clear direction, standards and expectations. 

  • Provide technical assurance and authorisation for commissioning and energisation of HVDC / FACTS assets, ensuring work is delivered safely, to quality, on time and within budget. 

  • Shape the future HVDC / FACTS Control & Protection systems and Cyber Security strategies, working closely with wider Operational, Technical Authority and Project Engineering colleagues. 

  • Oversee inspection, maintenance and fault response for HVDC / FACTS Control & Protection systems, including participation in emergency response for major incidents and network disturbances. 

  • Manage interfaces with contractors and key stakeholders, ensuring strong safety performance, technical compliance and operability. 

You have 

  • Significant experience leading technical teams within a high‑hazard, regulated electricity transmission or similar environment during project delivery or operational phases. 

  • Expert technical knowledge of HVDC / FACTS Control systems, Protection, Commissioning, including strong knowledge in Operational Technology systems. 

  • Proven experience managing contractors, OEMs and large operational or project programmes, including safety and performance outcomes 

  • Degree-level qualification in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience), with strong commercial and decision-making capability 

  • A clear, communication style with the ability to influence and collaborate across a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
