The role
SSE Power Distribution is part of the SSE group which owns and operates two electricity distribution networks and one transmission network, comprising of some 123,000 substations,127,000 kilometres of underground cables and overhead lines, and delivers power to 30% of the UK's landmass, serving 3.5 million customers.
We have islands off the West and North Coast of Scotland that are supplied by submarine cables. These islands have embedded Diesel Power Stations which acts as an emergency supply when faults occur. It is within our Power Station at Loch Carnan, Isle of South Uist that an exciting opportunity has arisen for a Mechanical Fitter.
You will
Be responsible for performing routine maintenance on the fixed installations of the power stations and undertake fault finding and repairs as part of your core duties.
Plan and organise maintenance work to ensure operational efficiency and assist with general day-to-day tasks within the stations.
Undertake the duties of a "unit operator" and form part of the team operating the stations during planned and unplanned outages.
Take part in an out-of-hours standby rota (full training will be provided).
Be based at Loch Carnan Power Station but may occasionally assist other island stations within the Embedded Power Station group (Islay, Stornoway, Tiree, Barra, Orkney, and Shetland) during prolonged runs.
Carry out duties and tasks outside your core skills, within your capabilities, in line with the company’s flexible working ethos.
You have
Skills in mechanical plant maintenance that will support your success in this role.
Experience with large marine diesels and associated ancillary plant and equipment (desirable)
Competence in using workshop equipment and small hand tools and a knowledge/experience of electrical systems, although this is not essential for the role.
A strong focus on safety and are fully conversant with risk assessments and safe working practices.
A clean driving licence and flexible approach to working hours and work location is a must.
