About the Role
Base Location: Flexible, however our preference is that you will be based in one of our key UK or Ireland sites, which includes but is not limited to:- Glasgow, Perth, Aberdeen, Inverness, Reading, Havant, Belfast or Dublin.

We are excited to be able to offer the opportunity to join the senior management of our high performing SSE Renewables Onshore Construction (SSEROC) team, accountable for promoting the vision, purpose, charter and values of the business unit.
The role holder is responsible for delivering the strategic plans, objectives and relationships necessary to ensure the successful operation of the business unit including the delivery of projects and programmes to meet our net zero transition plan.
Reporting to the SSE Renewables Onshore Head of Construction (UK&I) the role is responsible for providing construction expertise and support to development phase projects, as well as accountable and responsible for providing leadership and management to the team of experienced Construction Project Managers, delivering construction activities safely in accordance with our safety licence - ‘If it’s not safe, we don’t do it’.
The key duties and responsibilities of this role will be:
- Working with the Head of Construction and other Construction Portfolio Managers to deliver the revised operating model for construction in GB and Ireland, to ensure the teams are set up for success to deliver against targets and objectives and to ensure sufficient resource is in place to continue to meet business needs.
- Fulfilling the role of Project Director for several concurrent large capital projects across the region, providing Positive Leadership and management of a team of Construction Project Managers, and support to the broader project delivery teams and functions.
- Owning the project Business Case through the construction phase of projects and responsibility to ensure the teams are taking decisions during the construction phase in the best interests of the broader business, with health and safety as the primary factor.
- Ensuring efficient construction input and effective handovers which maintain momentum on projects, accounting for risks and meeting key stakeholder requirements whilst driving continuous improvement, digitisation, and lean processes.
- Maintaining effective relationships with the key construction support functions to communicate core delivery requirements for construction projects and ensure any issues are communicated, escalated as necessary and solutions found.
What do I need?
To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:
- Proven leadership skills and managerial ability in setting organisational design, resourcing, defining and assessing team competence and development, setting clear objectives and targets and fostering an inclusive and diverse environment to generate highly motivated and performing teams.
- Extensive track record of leading and safely delivering concurrent projects or programmes of work through the whole lifecycle to cost, schedule and quality in Renewables, Construction, or Energy sectors. Onshore wind, solar and/or battery experience beneficial.
- Experience of the governance, reporting, and management requirements for project and/or programmes of work in a matrix organisation within a regulated or unregulated environment, with prior delivery budget responsibilities of over £100m.
- Evidence of successful maintenance of professional networks and relationships with internal stakeholders within matrix organisations across teams, functions and with external and departments and external supply chain delivery partners, industry representatives and authoritative bodies, community groups and representation and possibly extending to JV partners.
