The role

The Thermal Commercial Team is responsible for managing the commercial and contractual positions across SSE’s flexible generation fleet. This role offers the opportunity to work across the full spectrum of wholesale energy markets — combining pricing, strategy, regulation, and commercial decision-making.

You’ll play a key role in analysing both short-term market dynamics and long-term structural trends, translating these into actionable insight that supports commercial strategy and asset performance. This is a highly analytical position with direct exposure to market movements, risk management, and the evolving energy landscape.

Some of our other main accountabilities will include;

  • Developing and maintaining analytical tools, reports, and dashboards to provide insight into market opportunities, pricing trends, and risk positions across UK & Ireland power markets.
  • Delivering analysis that supports both short-term commercial decisions and long-term strategic positioning of the Thermal portfolio.
  • Monitoring and assessing market design and regulatory developments, clearly articulating their commercial impact and implications for the business.
  • Support and, where required, lead the commercial aspects of fuel logistics for the Thermal fleet.
  • Contributing to the management of PPA contracts and JV relationships, providing analytical and commercial support
  • Providing data-driven recommendations to inform hedging strategies and approaches, supporting delivery of SSE Thermal P&L (~£400m/year)
  • Supporting capacity market prequalification processes across GB and Ireland, ensuring commercial considerations are fully reflected.
  • Working across multiple data sources and stakeholder inputs to ensure the business remains ahead of key risks and opportunities.

To be successful in this role, we'd love you to have;

  • A strong understanding of energy or commodity markets, including key drivers and pricing dynamics
  • Advanced analytical capability, with experience working with large datasets to generate clear, actionable insights
  • The ability to interpret and assess complex commercial positions or proposals
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate analysis into clear insight for a range of stakeholders
  • An awareness of regulatory frameworks and industry developments and their impact on commercial opportunities would be beneficial
