Salary: Competitive + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing, and family.

Working Pattern: Permanent | Full Time | Flexible First options available

The role

We are looking for an Assistant Power System Engineer to join our dynamic team at The National HVDC Centre and work on cutting-edge projects in the GB and international power industry.

The National HVDC Centre is owned and operated by SSEN Transmission but works with all the GB transmission companies. Opened in April 2017, the Centre is the national hub for HVDC modelling and simulation, knowledge exchange, and research. We use state-of-the-art high-performance computing facilities to model and resolve complex issues before they impact on the delivery or operation of HVDC projects. Our globally recognised work helps to ensure the integrity and security of GB energy supplies as we transition to a net zero network.

You will

  • Support our team of Engineers undertaking detailed HVDC simulation studies in real-time using vendor-supplied hardware, to investigate HVDC operation and interactions for real schemes connecting to the GB Network.
  • Support model verification, enhanced project testing, and model translation across power system simulation software packages, multi-device verification activity.
  • Actively support and contribute to our partner TO and ESO analysis and projects, providing an opportunity for broader industry network planning experience to be developed or previous network planning experience to be leveraged.
  • Draw out the insights learnt from the study work and clearly communicate the results (in technical reports and presentations) to external stakeholders. Enhance our reputation for excellence and our business functions as we grow to support GB industry’s ambitious HVDC strategy. Assist in hosting and maintenance of HVDC replicas and other hardware in our world-class simulation and test facilities.
  • Engage with industry groups and innovation projects to support in shaping the future of HVDC technology.

You have

  • Possess some combination of knowledge of HVDC (with an understanding of LCC and VSC and their integration with AC systems), network simulation (preferably real time simulation), network protection and an understanding of how to integrate test equipment in a HIL simulation setup (e.g. protection relays).
  • Experience in power system analysis and its applications, especially EMT studies or real-time simulation. Experience with PSCAD, RSCAD-RTDS, or OPAL-RT software, as well as hardware-in-loop would be preferred. However, if you are new to these technologies, rest assured that we offer a nurturing environment to help you develop and enhance your skills.
  • Strong technical knowledge of the electricity transmission network, with understanding of core elements, ideally with a strong focus on HVDC or FACTS.
  • Ability to write clear, well-structured technical reports and convey complex technical subjects to various stakeholders.
  • Motivation to work collaboratively with others, delivering outstanding results to meet the high standards expected by a world-leading organisation. Embrace our ambition to support continued growth.
