Keeping the lights on while striving for a net zero future is the biggest challenge of the energy industry in the years to come. When the wind doesn’t blow and the sun doesn’t shine, thermal assets play an important part in providing power on demand.
In SSE Thermal, we have a clear vision and investment strategy to decarbonise our fleet. While we continue ensuring grid stability, we are also working on mitigating CO2 emissions using new technologies.
As part of SSE Thermal’s engineering graduate programme, you will be in the forefront of developing and building first-of-its-kind low-carbon generation projects ranging from Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) to Hydrogen Production via Electrolysis. Now is a great time to join Thermal if you are willing to drive a paradigm shift towards a net zero world.
As part of SSE Thermal’s engineering graduate programme, you will be at the forefront of developing and building first-of-its-kind low-carbon generation projects ranging from Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) to Hydrogen Production via Electrolysis. Working alongside our expert engineers, you will be at the forefront of the team working towards security and reliability of our energy supply. Throughout the programme, you will have the support of your business mentor who will guide you in your professional development and towards chartership.
The first year of the graduate programme is a mix of rotations around the business, training opportunities, site visits and networking activities. The programme consists of 4 six-month placements, with the first placement being within your home team. You can then shape the rest of programme journey with a mix of operational and technical placements. Throughout your first year, you will collaborate graduate across the SSE business on a sustainability project.
The second year of the graduate programme has a similar structure to the first, but there is also scope to secure placements in non-engineering teams supporting business strategy. You can use the skills and experience developed over year one to shape your second year and choose the department you’d like to spend your next six month placement in. The second year graduate team will help welcome and support the new first year graduates, giving an opportunity to share best practice and experiences.
On completion of the graduate programme, you will return to your original home team in a full-time position as an engineer. As an engineer in Thermal, you could be looking after our Thermal assets and construction sites, helping to realise the project applications in our pipeline or optimising operation of our assets or working with our business development team on projects relating to new technologies.
Scaling up renewable generation is an important part of our strategy to achieve net zero goals, but we know it cannot sustain our energy needs all the time. When renewable generation is low, or when the markets are volatile, low-carbon Thermal generation can help us satisfy energy demand. Our Thermal business plays a significant role in our net zero ambitions and our team are working on innovative commercial-scale CCS and Hydrogen projects whilst building an exceptionally unique skillset for the future of the power industry
