The role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Investment Associate to join the SSE Pacifico K.K. (“SSEP”) Finance Team, based in Tokyo.

Reporting to the Head of Finance, you will play a pivotal role in the development and the running of complex financial models and scenario analysis, to drive financial and commercial decisions for offshore wind energy projects in Japan.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Creating, developing, and maintaining financial models used for assessing key strategic decisions, such as assessing business cases and driving bidding strategy in offshore wind auctions
  • Carrying out competitor and sensitivity analyses, to optimise bidding strategy
  • Coordinating and reviewing the work of external consultants, such as the financial (or other) advisers
  • Ensuring that investments are put forward using reasonable assumptions, especially regarding bankability
  • Preparing presentations to communicate findings and make recommendations to SSEP’s Board and shareholders (SSE Renewables and Pacifico Energy)
  • Evaluating the impact of investments or projects on the SSE Group’s key financial metrics, such as EPS, net debt, and credit ratings

You will work closely with the wider SSEP team, including Project Development, Procurement, Engineering and Energy Markets, in order to optimise the business case. This will involve working on a variety of value drivers across the project to manage risk, reduce cost and maximise financial return.

You will also work closely with the SSE Corporate Finance team (based in Europe) up to investment decision, ensuring alignment on the business case and supporting the investment governance processes.

Skills and Experience

  • Robust analytical skills, with a keen attention to detail
  • Solid financial modelling experience, including experience of project finance modelling
  • Previous experience in infrastructure, energy or utilities
  • Understanding of key drivers, risks and sensitivities in financial modelling
  • Experience of financial investment appraisal techniques
  • Capacity to present complex financial issues in simple terms
  • Fluent Japanese and English
  • Ability to provide high quality work on a timely and consistent basis

In addition to the above you will be a good communicator, professional and diligent, with the ability to work to tight deadlines and under pressure, without compromising on the quality of your work. You will be flexible, pro-active, know how to manage expectations and be able to adapt to changing business needs.
