The role

We’re excited to offer an opportunity for a Lead Project Engineer within our Onshore team to lead multidisciplinary engineers in delivering safe, innovative and value-adding engineering solutions across our transmission project portfolio. You will play a pivotal role in providing a safe and reliable supply of electricity, supporting delivery of a Network for Net Zero.

The role in the Onshore team supports delivery of major substation, overhead line (OHL) and underground cable (UGC) projects in the East Coast of Scotland.

You will

  • Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver major transmission infrastructure projects, creating an environment where people can work together effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.
  • Provide engineering leadership, governance and assurance throughout the project lifecycle, supporting robust design development, managing technical risk and ensuring compliance with relevant standards and legislation.
  • Work collaboratively with project teams and stakeholders to develop practical and innovative engineering solutions, balancing safety, quality, programme, operability, compliance and value for money.
  • Champion Safety by Design and fulfil CDM responsibilities, ensuring potential design risks are identified, understood and mitigated from the earliest stages of project development.
  • Build strong relationships with colleagues, contractors, operational users and external stakeholders, fostering collaboration, sharing knowledge and supporting the development of engineers across the team through coaching and mentoring.

You have

  • Experience leading the development and delivery of complex engineering projects within the electricity transmission sector or a comparable infrastructure environment, with the ability to manage competing priorities and contribute to successful project outcomes.
  • Experience of working across multiple engineering disciplines, coordinating technical interfaces and supporting the delivery of high-quality engineering solutions.
  • Technical knowledge of electricity transmission infrastructure, including substations, overhead lines and underground cables, or transferable experience gained within a similar industry.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, enabling you to explain complex technical information clearly, influence decision-making and work effectively with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • A degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil or a related engineering discipline. Chartered Engineer status, or a willingness to work towards professional registration, would be advantageous.

About SSE

SSE’s purpose is to be restless every day until we make electricity clean, affordable and available for all.

We do this by developing, building, operating and investing in electricity infrastructure and businesses needed in the energy transition. This includes electricity transmission and distribution networks, onshore and offshore wind farms, hydro-electric power and flexible thermal generation. We also provide products and services for businesses and other customers.

Our investment plan will see SSE invest £33bn in critical electricity infrastructure to 2030.

SSEN Transmission own and operate the electricity transmission network across the north of Scotland. We transport electricity from where it is generated to where it is needed, ensuring a safe and reliable electricity supply for the communities we serve. But that's not all – we're upgrading the grid to deliver cleaner, homegrown power for the future and building the infrastructure needed for a cleaner electricity system to create secure power for generations to come.
