Base Location: Cumbernauld National HVDC Centre

Salary: £50,100 - £87,100 (Dependant on experience level) + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

Working Pattern: Permanent | Full Time | Flexible First options available

The role

We are looking for Power System Engineers at three levels (Engineer, Senior Engineer and Principal Engineer) to join our National HVDC Centre and to work on cutting-edge projects in GB and the international power industry.

Opened in April 2017, the Centre is the national hub for HVDC modelling and simulation, knowledge exchange, and research. We use state-of-the-art high-performance computing facilities to model and resolve complex issues before they impact on the delivery or operation of HVDC projects. Our globally recognised work helps to ensure the integrity and security of GB energy supplies as we transition to a net zero network.

You will

  • Deliver HVDC power system analysis and simulation, including EMT and/or real-time studies, using advanced simulation platforms, vendor supplied models, and hardware in the loop facilities.
  • Lead and contribute to technical projects, identifying key insights and communicating findings clearly through high quality reports, publications, and presentations to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and partners to develop HVDC capability, support research activity, and enable the delivery and operation of real world HVDC projects.
  • Support the growth and reputation of The National HVDC Centre, contributing to business development activities and the operation, hosting, and maintenance of world class simulation and test facilities.
  • Engage with industry groups and innovation programmes to shape the future of HVDC technology, and at Senior/Principal level provide technical leadership, mentor engineers, and influence technical direction.

You have

  • For Senior and Principal Engineer level, the ability to lead technical work or processes within the HVDC Centre, acting as a technical lead internally and/or within the wider industry.
  • For Principal Engineer level, recognised expertise in real-time and EMT analysis, with the capability to shape technical policy within The HVDC Centre and across the industry, act as a technical authority on HVDC, and mentor and develop other engineers.
  • Experience in power system analysis, particularly EMT studies and/or real-time simulation, with exposure to tools such as PSCAD, RTDS/RSCAD, OPALRT and hardware in the loop environments (or the motivation to develop these skills).
  • Strong technical knowledge of electricity transmission networks, with an understanding of core network components and ideally experience in HVDC and/or FACTS technologies.
  • Knowledge of safe systems of work within laboratory or datacentre environments, including the operation of high value computing equipment, complex data networks, and customer facing facilities.
  • The ability to communicate complex technical information clearly, producing well-structured technical reports and engaging effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • A collaborative and motivated approach, working effectively with others to deliver high quality outcomes and support the continued growth of a world leading organisation.

We are recruiting for a range of experience levels, so if you do not tick all these boxes but are excited about the role, we would love to hear from you.
