Base Location: Reading, Glasgow, Perth or London

Salary: £78,400 - £117,600 (depending on skills and experience) + car/car allowance + performance-related bonus + a range of other benefits to support your family, finances and wellbeing.

The role 

As the Head of Regulation for ECS BG, you will lead the way in identifying, prioritising, and addressing high-value and high-risk regulatory issues for ECS in GB. You will focus on Distributed Energy and Business Energy, ECS’ activities in GB, and work closely with the Head of Regulation, Ireland whose team supports ECS’ activities in ROI and NI as well the Head of Corporate Affairs for ECS who represents Corporate Affairs and Regulation on the ECS executive leadership team. You’ll be working closely with the Directors of these businesses as well as the Managing Director of ECS and develop an extensive network of relationships in Distributed Energy and Business Energy.

Your role involves influencing change by representing ECS’ priorities and commercial interests through proactive and reactive engagement with the regulator, code administrators and other central bodies.  You'll be the expert providing regulatory and strategic advice internally, contributing to the strategic direction, and playing a crucial part in maintaining compliance and minimising regulatory risk.  Leading a small team, you’ll foster consistently high performance through effective coaching, development, and performance management. 

You will

  • Influence regulatory change by actively representing ECS priorities and commercial interests through consultation responses, industry forums, and proposing changes to regulatory arrangements.
  • Provide expert guidance, interpretation, and regulatory advice, contributing to the strategic direction of ECS while finding solutions to complex regulatory issues.
  • Position yourself as a strategic advisor to the Executive team and a wide range of internal stakeholders to ensure effective and efficient delivery of regulatory strategy, supporting successful commercial opportunities and provide clear guidance on compliance related matters to understand regulatory risk.
  • Build and maintaining effective relationships with external stakeholders including Ofgem, code administrators/managers, central bodies, represent SSE in meetings with regulators and policymakers, and ensure high quality and persuasive written consultation responses to proposed changes.
  • Be part of the leadership of the Group & Markets Regulation team, a collaborative team supporting SSE’s energy businesses and Group executive.

You have

  • Strategic understanding of the interactions between multiple legislative, regulatory, policy and code requirements and objectives, in addition to a track record of delivering positive outcomes in regulatory engagement.
  • Depth of knowledge and understanding of the commercial and market drivers affecting regulated supply businesses and ability to navigate and advice on licence exempt business and the evolution of new business areas that may be subject to changing regulation.  While experience gained within energy regulation is desirable, it is not essential.
  • Superior writing skills, synthesising information from various sources into cohesive and impactful written communication for stakeholders, regulatory bodies, and senior leaders.
  • Excellent communication skills in optimising internal and external relationships to raise awareness of issues, obtain information to quantify risk or value, and support strategic priorities.
  • Ability to collaborate seamlessly with cross-functional teams, as well as interacting confidently and gaining trust at executive level.
