Base Location: Walton Park, Portsmouth

Salary: £34,749 - £40,939 + £11,274 shift allowance + standby payments + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

Working Pattern: Permanent | Full Time | Office based, 24/7 shift pattern

The role

As a Fault Dispatcher you will have first sight of all emergency incidents, safety reports and power cuts.  This overview of all jobs means the dispatcher is uniquely positioned as the first line of defence against a dangerous situation.

As a Fault Dispatcher you will communicate with many different departments within SSEN daily. Often this will be two-way communication, with dispatchers providing vital information for others to act on.

You will

  • Review, assess, and investigate emergency reports for dangerous or life‑threatening situations, ensuring that all relevant safety advice has been provided.
  • Efficiently resource jobs and deliver clear, accurate information to all relevant field staff, Control Engineers, and Duty Managers as required.
  • Interpret technical details from onsite staff and internal systems, converting this into accurate customer information so that all customers — especially vulnerable customers — remain informed in line with SSEN’s vision and purpose.
  • Coordinate emergency unplanned work and resources in real time to maximise available regulatory reward benefits, such as the Interruptions Incentive Scheme (IIS), broad measure, and similar mechanisms.
  • Take ownership of incidents, ensuring all information is current while fully maintaining network safety. You will work rigorously with field-based teams and ensure smooth transfer of ownership across the 24/7 operational period.

You have

  • An emergency dispatch or utilities background.
  • The confidence to engage with colleagues across the business, including senior managers and operational teams.
  • Competency with Microsoft Office and collaborative tools, along with strong enthusiasm for embracing future technological advancements.
  • The ability to collate and assess information from multiple sources to support accurate operational decision-making.
  • Strong customer service skills, including the ability to build long‑standing relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • The ability to work to a tight schedule, continually re‑evaluating and prioritising tasks while ensuring customers remain at the centre of all outcomes.
