Base Location: For this role, we require successful applicants to be based from one of our Scottish locations and you'll be expected to spend 50% of your working week in the office – Glasgow, Perth, Aberdeen or Inverness

The role

Join SSEN Transmission's growing HVDC Engineering team and help deliver some of Europe's largest electricity transmission projects. As Assistant Engineering Manager – HVDC, you'll support the technical delivery of major HVDC converter station developments, coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams, managing technical challenges and ensuring safe, integrated solutions are delivered to the highest standards. This role offers a fantastic opportunity to develop your HVDC expertise and progress towards future engineering leadership positions.

You will

  • Support the Project Engineering Manager in delivering HVDC engineering solutions across all project phases, from concept development through to commissioning and handover, on major infrastructure projects valued between £700m and £2bn.
  • Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams across HVDC Control & Protection, High Voltage Plant and Auxiliary Systems, providing technical direction and ensuring effective integration throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Identify, assess and manage engineering, quality and interface risks, working closely with project leadership, contractors and stakeholders to proactively resolve issues and protect project outcomes, programme delivery and asset performance.
  • Manage and develop engineering resources, including project engineers, specialist consultants and external design partners, while supporting technical reviews to ensure designs meet project requirements, industry standards and long-term operational needs.
  • Champion Safety by Design principles and a strong engineering safety culture, supporting safe construction, installation, testing and commissioning activities while maintaining engineering quality and compliance throughout project delivery.

You have

  • A degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related discipline, with Chartered Engineer status or demonstrable progress towards chartership.
  • Significant experience in HVDC, power transmission, substation design, control and protection systems, high voltage plant, or other utility-scale electrical engineering environments.
  • A strong understanding of complex system integration and the delivery of multidisciplinary engineering projects.
  • Experience managing technical interfaces across multiple engineering disciplines, contractors, suppliers and stakeholders, with the ability to review, evaluate and challenge technical solutions where required.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with experience supporting, mentoring and developing engineers. Knowledge of power system simulation studies would be advantageous.
