Sumith Sebastian Varghese - Quantity Surveying Graduate

What did you study at university?

I completed an MSc in Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management at Heriot-Watt University, graduating in 2024. My studies provided a good foundation in contract administration, procurement and cost management, all of which have been directly applicable to my role within SSE.

Which sectors did you consider applying to for your graduate role? What made you choose SSE and the area you are now working in? 

While studying at Heriot-Watt University, I considered opportunities across a range of sectors including construction, infrastructure, consultancy, and energy. Prior to joining SSE, I worked as a Junior Cost Engineer, where I gained valuable experience in cost management, commercial reporting, and project controls. That role strengthened my Quantity Surveying.

One of the key reasons I chose SSE was the opportunity to contribute to the UK's net zero ambitions and be part of projects that support the transition to a more sustainable energy network. The scale of investment in transmission infrastructure and the importance of these projects to the country's future made the role particularly appealing.

As an international student, I was also attracted by SSE's commitment to developing talent through its graduate programme. It demonstrated the company's inclusive culture and willingness to invest in people from diverse backgrounds.

Working within SSEN Transmission has given me the opportunity to contribute to major projects such as the Skye OHL Reinforcement Project, while continuously developing my technical and commercial skills in a sector that plays a critical role in the UK's energy transition.

How did you find the recruitment process?  Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programmes?

I found the recruitment process to be well structured and supportive, with each stage providing an opportunity to demonstrate my enthusiasm, communication skills, and motivation for joining SSE.

My advice for students considering the SSE Graduate Programme would be to take the time to understand SSE's role in the energy sector, stay informed about current energy market trends, and learn about the company's contribution towards achieving net zero ambitions. It's also important to prepare examples that showcase your teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership skills from university, work experience, or extracurricular activities. I would highly recommend practising aptitude and time-based assessment tests, such as those available through SHL, as these form an important part of the recruitment process. Most importantly, be yourself and show genuine enthusiasm for the industry, the opportunities available within SSE, and the impact you can make in supporting the energy transition.

Tell us a bit about your current role?

As a Graduate Quantity Surveyor, I support the commercial management of major transmission infrastructure projects. My responsibilities include reviewing and assessing compensation events, managing cost and commercial trackers, supporting procurement activities, monitoring early warnings, and working with project teams to manage commercial risk.

A big part of my role involves collaborating with colleagues across engineering, environmental, procurement, and project management teams, as well as working closely with our contractors and suppliers. This provides great exposure to different areas of project delivery and helps me develop both my commercial and stakeholder management skills.

What is your split between office, site and home working?

My role is mainly a mix of office and home working, which provides flexibility and allows me to collaborate with colleagues across different teams. I also visit project sites occasionally to gain a better understanding of the works being delivered and to see firsthand how the commercial and contractual aspects of a project relate to activities on site.

Are you working towards a professional qualification?

I am keen to continue my professional development and plan to work towards a recognised professional qualification in the near future. SSE provides excellent support for learning and development, and I look forward to building on my experience while working towards chartered status as my career progresses.
