Awais Bhatti - Engineering Graduate

First, tell us a bit about yourself! What did you study at university? Where are you based, and did you relocate for the grad programme?

I’m Awais Bhatti, an SSE Renewables graduate Engineer based in Glasgow. I joined the company in September 2023. I graduated from The University of Strathclyde with a degree in Naval Architecture & Ocean engineering. I live near Glasgow, so I usually just commute by train to get to the office which is based in the city centre.

Which sectors did you consider applying to for your graduate role? What made you choose SSE Renewables?

As part of my degree, we learned about offshore renewable energy and how important it was for future generations. After graduating I started looking for careers with companies that produced cleaner energy and had goals for future development. I was impressed with the work SSE were doing and the vast projects which would be added to their portfolio. I also felt at comfort as SSE were offering a safe, inclusive and diverse working environment.

How did you find the recruitment process?  Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programmes?

I found the SSE recruitment process to be positive and very well structured. Like any recruitment process it was challenging and extremely competitive, however, what I liked most was the communication from SSE at each stage, it felt very inviting and made the process feel more relaxed allowing me to show my personal and academic interests.

If you’re considering applying for the SSE Graduate scheme, I would recommend researching SSE’s company values and goals and learn in detail about what the company is working towards. I would also recommend doing practice tests online to best prepare for the real one. During the interview stage it is important to ‘be yourself’, SSE want to know you as a person, not just your academic achievements.

Tell us a bit about your experience on the graduate programme?

The best thing about the graduate scheme is that it allows you to do placements across the wider business. I have spent time in Offshore Wind, Onshore Wind and Solar & Battery working on a variety of different tasks and objectives, from substructure analysis to commercial investment modelling.

I’ve really enjoyed travelling the UK for site visits which allows you to get practical knowledge and first-hand experience rather than being stuck in an office. I’ve also enjoyed the team days which gives you an opportunity to meet new colleagues and expand your network.
