Women in Power - Cath

Lead Project Development Manager

I’m Cath Swan and I’ve been at SSEN Transmission, part of the wider SSE group, for just over 4 years.

At school, I always enjoyed physics and maths so, when it came to choosing a degree, I decided to study Civil Engineering at university, qualifying as a Chartered Engineer.

I began my working life as an engineering consultant, working on a variety of projects and sectors, ranging from supporting water companies in their regulatory reporting and preparation of business cases, engineering input for Design and Build projects in the Water Sector, completing structural condition inspections and project management of flood alleviation schemes. The variety of work provided great opportunity to develop as a young engineer and strengthened my appreciation of how transferable our skills are, giving me confidence to apply myself to new things.

My first experience of working on a live, high- profile, critical infrastructure project (similar to the projects I now work on) was when I worked on the Thames Tideway Tunnel project in London, as an Area Delivery Manager. I enjoyed the fast pace and stakeholder focus of the role and when looking for a new role I saw SSEN as a similarly exciting opportunity with a significant pipeline of major projects which my experience in the Water Sector (which is also regulated) could easily be transferred to.

When I decided that I was ready for a new challenge, I knew I wanted a role that was not only fast paced and stakeholder focused, but one where I could make a positive impact to society. I saw that SSE had a very clear purpose and vision to contributing to Net Zero and so I decided to apply for a Development Project Manager role with SSEN Transmission.

Since joining the team, I’ve continued to progress: first to Senior Development Project Manager leading a team managing a range of projects with a combined value at completion over £2billion and, more recently, I have been promoted to Lead Development Project Manager, moving from the Onshore Development team across to the Offshore Development team, providing opportunity for me to breadthen my knowledge of the business and sector. The rate of growth in the business has meant there have been lots of opportunities for progression and diversification which is very exciting.

Working in the ‘Development’ phase of our projects my team manage the early phases of projects, identifying and assessing options to deliver a project before passing on to our ‘Delivery’ team for further refinement and construction. The types of projects we are involved in is varied and this development can include selection of a new substation site, assessment and development of route options for a new overhead line or works to upgrade existing assets, considering feasibility and options whilst minimising disruption to the live network. As Project Managers we are ultimately accountable for the success of the projects, managing and reporting financial, programme and risk aspects of the project whilst coordinating the various disciplines inputting and ensuring Health and Safety remains a key focus.

As a line manager, I’m passionate about ensuring the development of my team, providing varied opportunities and ensuring their wellbeing, supporting flexible working to ensure a good life balance. I work a four-day week and encourage others to consider options for working flexibly, an opportunity that has traditionally been associated with women and childcare commitments but can add real value to lots of different circumstances. With it being open to all there is huge potential benefit to those traditionally utilising it, sharing personal commitments and responsibilities and enhancing their ability to have equal professional opportunities.

"I'd really encourage women to put themselves out there, take up opportunities that you get and say yes, say yes as much as you can, whether that be opportunities to meet new people, see new things and get new skills and really understand how transferable your skills are."
