The role

We are looking for an experienced and commercially minded Head of Energy Market Development to lead SSE’s response to the evolution of energy markets and industry codes across a rapidly changing energy landscape.

This is a senior and influential leadership role, combining market analysis, commercial insight, and external engagement. This role will shape SSE’s position on emerging issues, and translating market evolution into clear, actionable commercial insights through anticipating changes in market design, regulation, technology, and consumer behaviour and will ensure we are well positioned to respond to emerging opportunities and challenges through influencing the future design of the markets in which SSE operates,

You will

  • Shape and deliver SSE’s approach to energy market development, identifying and responding to emerging changes across wholesale, balancing, flexibility, and capacity markets, as well as wider market interventions and investment support mechanisms.
  • Lead SSE’s response to market design, energy codes, and industry change, developing evidence-based positions and championing appropriate reforms and code-change proposals, including appeals where relevant. You will ensure changes are clearly understood and translated into practical commercial insight for the business.
  • Build trusted relationships and represent SSE externally, working with regulators, government bodies, industry organisations, market and network operators and strategic partners to positively influence market design, policy development, and regulatory reform.
  • Provide clear market intelligence and strategic insight, monitoring industry developments, competitor activity, regulation and emerging technologies, and overseeing analysis that helps senior leaders understand market change and make informed strategic and commercial decisions.
  • Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing market development team, working collaboratively across energy economics, strategy, operations, regulation, finance, technology, and customer teams to create an integrated approach to market development and foster an inclusive culture of collaboration, innovation and continuous improvement.

You have

  • Considerable experience within energy markets, strategy, regulation, commercial leadership, or a related discipline, with a strong understanding of energy market structures, regulatory frameworks, industry codes, and the commercial implications of market change.
  • Strong strategic and analytical capability, with the commercial judgement to navigate complexity, anticipate emerging issues and translate detailed market developments into clear recommendations and actionable commercial insight.
  • Experience of responding to and influencing market, regulatory or industry-code change, ideally including engagement with regulators, government bodies, market operators, or other influential industry stakeholders.
  • Strong relationship-building, communication and influencing skills, with the credibility to engage constructively with senior internal and external stakeholders, bring different perspectives together and represent SSE effectively in industry forums.
  • Experience of leading and developing people through change, creating an inclusive and collaborative environment where teams can perform at their best. Experience across renewable energy, flexibility markets, distributed energy resources, decarbonisation, or wider energy-transition programmes would be valuable.

About SSE
