We are the electricity Distribution Network Operator (DNO) responsible for delivering power to over 3.8 million homes and businesses across central southern England and the north of Scotland. We serve some of the most diverse and unique geographies across the UK, and keep customers and communities connected whilst developing the flexible electricity network vital to achieving net zero.
We're powered by talented, enthusiastic people in a range of roles driving the business to meet our responsibilities and achieve our goals. That’s why we’re looking for talented individuals with bags of energy who get the job done and deliver engineering excellence.

Join us and you’ll gain real hands-on experience, build an invaluable network and develop a unique set of skills which will shape your career. We offer a structured yet challenging development programme where you'll have the support of the Graduate Programme Manager and a business mentor to assist you in reaching your full potential. The programme will support your career development into a permanent role with SSE that reflects your experience and passion.
Your first year will provide you with the foundation blocks of your future career, developing both commercial excellence and leadership talent. You will rotate every three months into different business areas and travel to key sites to gain better understanding of the Distribution business.
In your second year, you’ll gain all round knowledge of the business and get involved in more in-depth projects, including working with other graduates. As well continuous improvement training and wider learning events, you will be involved in several placements throughout your final year.
There are plenty of opportunities within Distribution to progress your career. Our previous graduates have secured roles as Economic Analysts, Business Performance Analysts and Commercial Business Analysts, leading on key projects and impacting strategic decision making within Distribution. Many have gone on to become Senior Leaders within our business building from their skills and knowledge developed on the Graduate programme.
An increase in low-carbon distributed generation, electric vehicles, demand side response and energy storage are transforming our network, giving customers access to new products and services.
To accommodate the changes that will enable net-zero, we are transitioning from operating as a Distribution Network Operator (DNO), to become a Distribution System Operator (DSO). We are putting customers and communities at the heart of the process and ensuring the best value for money. In 2017, we published Supporting a Smarter Electricity System which outlines the principles we will adhere to during this transition.
Our transition to DSO demands greater flexibility in management of the electricity network to ensure supply and demand are always balanced.
