Jacob Murphy - Project Management Graduate

First, tell us a bit about yourself! What programme did you join at SSE and where are you based?

I’m Jacob Murphy and joined the SSE Graduate programme in May last year before the initial 2023 September intake as a Project Management Graduate within Distributed Energy. I’m currently based out of Reading and Slough.

What did you study at university?

I started my undergraduate degree in Geography at the University of Aberdeen in 2013 until 2017. I returned to the University of Reading in 2020 where I studied Construction Management and graduated in 2023.

Which sectors did you consider applying to for your graduate role? What made you choose SSE and the area you are now working in?

I wanted to work in the construction of light industrial electrical infrastructure and major projects because it combines technical challenge, innovation, and real-world impact. The prospect of being part of large-scale developments really excited me as I enjoy problem-solving and collaborating with diverse teams to bring complex projects to life. The electrical infrastructure field is constantly evolving with advancements in renewable energy, sustainability and smart technologies. It’s rewarding to know that my work will help drive progress and improve everyday operations in the modern industrial landscape.

How did you find the recruitment process?  Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programmes?

The SSE application process was very straightforward, efficient and easy to follow. I was never waiting more than a week between interviews and was provided with dates in advance, giving ample time to research the specific part of the Business the role was in and prepare additional information that was asked for specific tasks in alignment with university.

The advice I would give to any prospective applicant would be, have an open mindset of what you want to do when applying as well as post graduate programme. I would also try to network with people in the industry and really think about what you can bring to the organisation.

Tell us a bit about your current role?

I am currently working in the delivery team as a Graduate Project Manager within Major Projects and Private Networks. As a Graduate Project Manager I am involved in both assisting and leading my own projects which are located on the Slough Trading Estate. This has allowed me to be involved in the construction process from start to finish of the delivery process. Outside of my graduate role I am involved in the Inclusion and Diversity Group within SSE Enterprise.
