What is the Role?

SSE are positioning ourselves to be one of the leading energy companies in a net zero world. As part of this process we are expanding and transforming our Energy portfolio management area where the prompt trading team are a part of. Building upon the existing platform of knowledge and experience within EPM we have already begun improving our systems, expanding the data management and analytical capabilities to support identification of opportunities, the expansion into new territories and management of new asset types.

EPM & Investments aim is to create value-adding energy trading services for all stakeholders and external customers by providing superior returns and diversity of fuel supply through its extensive renewables portfolio, efficient and flexible thermal generation and route to markets that are aligned to SSE's risk strategy. We are part of the SSE group powering change in the transition to a low carbon economy.

Your key accountabilities will include;-

  • To be part of a highly specialised trading team to effectively deliver the hedging activities for the Thermal, Renewables and Customer businesses at a value of over £2bn in trades each year and manage a proprietary portfolio.
  • You will provide a critical optimisation role to commercially optimise the portfolios of these internal businesses and the overall group within the 1 week to 2 months out trading window.
  • Your team is part of the full optimisation life cycle and will be expected to contribute to strategies across all timeframes. It is expected you will be part of the drive for change and improvement alongside adding value through trading.
  • You will be expected to add value through creation and execution of strategies and utilise your experience within the energy markets to assist in development of analytical models.

What do I need?

You will have experience of working in energy prompt trading with sound knowledge of UK and preferably European energy markets and drivers with a track record of positive book contribution.

To be considered we would love you to have;

  • Demonstrable skills in data analysis, complex problem solving and a strong teamworking attitude would also be beneficial.
  • You will be able to grasp new information quickly and gain insights from complex market information whilst also being able to communicate it simply to others.
  • We expect sound knowledge of trading of commodities. The ability to prioritise and identify key market information and derive assessment on impact on price or strategies.
  • Experience of utilising support functions and various teams to drive trading forward. The ability to report on and present information to all levels throughout SSE.
  • This is a high-profile role, central to the success of SSE and will be the forefront of the green energy transition supporting the growth of the whole business.
