SSEN Transmission is central to the UK’s transition to net zero. Our network will play a key role in decarbonising the electricity system and powering the UK's net zero goal. With a £20bn investment programme over the next 10 years, we are rapidly growing to deliver Scotland’s largest ever electricity system investment.

As Senior Engineer – Power System Modelling, you will be a subject matter expert in power system modelling and analysis. You will be a senior member of the team responsible for the PowerFactory system, network models, and code repository. You will also develop processes and tools to support power system analysis across the business. This role will report to the Senior Manager - Power System Modelling in the Investment Planning Team.

Responsibilities of the Senior Engineer – Power Systems Modelling include:

- Network Modelling: Develop and implement processes for updating, quality control, and releasing the PowerFactory master network model, ensuring it meets the requirements of business stakeholders.

- Data Preparation & Governance: Oversee data exchange with the National Energy System Operator (NESO) and Transmission Owners, in accordance with the System Operator Transmission Owner Code for the Electricity Ten Year Statement (ETYS). Coordinate model exchanges with internal and external stakeholders for system studies, such as boundary capability, customer connections, and fault levels.

- Power System Analysis Process Development: Create automated processes and tools for power system analysis in PowerFactory to improve efficiency and consistency in system studies within the Investment Planning Team. Utilise generative AI and machine learning to optimise these processes.

- Investment Planning Datasets & Dashboards: Lead the development of datasets and dashboards to provide data-driven insights for decision-making, based on the network models.

- Business Improvement: Identify and implement improvements to network modelling and analysis processes and systems, developing innovative solutions to enhance performance.

What do I need?

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

- Experience in power system modelling and analysis for transmission or distribution networks using PowerFactory or similar software.

- An understanding of the technical requirements for studies related to transmission networks, such as network modelling, power flow, fault levels, voltage and thermal capability, transient stability, harmonics, and power quality.

- Proficiency in developing automation for power system analysis using Python APIs (e.g. load flow, contingency analysis, optimisation), along with experience in data processing, analysis, and visualisation using tools such as Python, SQL, Excel, or PowerBi.

- An interest or appreciation for learning software development best practices, including agile methodologies, version control, and CI/CD.

- The ability to communicate clearly and concisely to senior stakeholders and non-technical audiences.
