What is the Role?

As a Senior Engineer in Electrical design, you'll work within an exciting, challenging and growing area of the SSE Enterprise business, supporting and undertaking the development of design for Electrical Distribution projects for a variety of customers, in compliance with the relevant legislation and design standards.

You will apply your skills and experience in helping the Engineering Solutions team provide expert advice, first-class innovation and reliable support throughout the Distributed Energy business as well as helping to develop capability within the team.

We will support your personal development as you work to develop innovative engineering solutions to successfully optimise scope, cost, programme and risk for projects, taking into account health, safety, and the environment throughout.

You will play a crucial role in delivering high quality design standards and supporting the emerging Distributed Energy market, and in doing so, driving business growth.

Key Accountabilities

- Carrying out Electrical Distribution network designs; Develop HV and LV electrical distribution networks designs, complying with the relevant NERS design guidance, appropriate Network/Systems Operator design standards and industry legislation. You will complete this in an innovative, safe and commercially viable standard against agreed milestones.

- Deliver excellent levels of internal and external customer satisfaction by ensuring a high standard of quality within your engineering projects and deliverables and will confidently engage with customers and stakeholders in order to continuously strive to exceed their expectations.

- Proactively seek out lessons learned from other projects in order to continuously improve, and embed best practice, which you will share with the wider team.

- Responsible for conducting 'Peer Reviews' with your colleagues in order to provide a high standard of quality and consistency in design.

- Technical Project Support to the Distributed Energy Business.

- Support the stakeholders in each Distributed Energy sector through providing the benefits of your skills and experience, as well as taking ownership as the technical lead on projects to research and develop Engineering solutions to meet the needs of the emerging market.

- Be required to plan, develop and coordinated solutions to meet the needs of internal and external clients, contribute to client meetings and provide strong leadership on behalf of the Engineering Solutions team in ensuring a fully coordinated approach to design development and costing, showing strong commercial awareness.

- Contract Management and Commercial Engineering; Support in the management of design contracts for the development and design of your solutions to address the requirements of a project. You will provide a point of contact for the flow of technical information, report to the business on progress, and take ownership to drive key issues through to resolution in a collaborative way.

- Ensure that your developed solutions and specifications are represented in a contractually effective way in order for SSE Enterprise to hold strong and resilient contracts with our sub-contractor chain, while supporting the tendering and execution of delivery contracts in order to ensure that design requirements are adhered to.

- Development and Innovation; Work continuously to innovate in your role. You will work closely with the Engineering leadership team, and senior representatives of each of the SSE Enterprise businesses, in order to identify improvements to processes and tools which will introduce positive enhancements to our business.

- Take ownership for driving forward key innovation projects in order to enhance the solutions which Enterprise develop in order to explore the opportunities in the emerging DE Market, identifying key challenges and creative solutions to drive growth in the business.

What do I need?

- An understanding of the energy industry and the UK energy regulation.

- Strong understanding of the UK Electricity distribution structure and regulations.

Essential Functional / Technical Skills

- Qualified Electrical Engineer - to HNC, degree or equivalent certification level.

- Ideally Chartered/Incorporated Engineer.

- Background in Electrical Design, with a broad technical knowledge and 5 years' minimum experience in a similar role.

- Track record in delivering design engineering, ideally through the RIBA Stages requirements.

- Knowledge and experience with engineering legislation and industry good practice.

- Competent to operate within the NERS design submission and approval process.

- Experience of working in a design and development environment within the energy industry is ideal for this role & in working with engineering standards and specifications is preferable.

- You will be a highly motivated and self-starting individual, with very effective written and spoken communication skills, confident in making presentations to others.

- You will have a flexible, adaptable approach and a strong ability to work with others along with an exceptional team player, able to work independently, and resourceful in ensuring delivery against agreed deadlines for a wide range of activities. You will have strong planning skills, and ability to manage your time and prioritise effectively.

- You will be a collaborator; someone who can understand others and engage stakeholders in an effective way.

- Driven to develop yourself and others.
