The Role

SSE Renewables is leading the transition to a net zero world through bold, long-term investment in renewable energy. Coire Glas is one of the most exciting and technically ambitious pumped storage hydro projects ever developed in the UK — a project that will play a vital role in balancing the energy system and supporting the future of clean, homegrown power.

As Project Commercial Director, you’ll be an integral part of the Coire Glas project community as well as supporting the wider SSER Commercial team — partnering with the Project Director and Finance Director to ensure the project’s commercial success. You’ll help shape the commercial vision and nurture a collaborative, high-performing commercial team on this historical and award winning Hydro asset.

This is a pivotal and purpose-driven opportunity to influence one of the UK’s largest low-carbon infrastructure investments — combining strategic insight, commercial depth, and a passion for building trusted relationships across complex partnerships.

You will:

  • Develop and implement the project’s commercial strategy, ensuring it supports the business case, investment criteria and long-term shareholder value.
  • Empower and guide a diverse commercial team through a matrix structure, fostering a culture of trust, curiosity and shared accountability where people thrive and deliver their best.
  • Shape and manage key contract negotiations, including construction and offtake agreements, ensuring risk is balanced and commercial outcomes are optimised.
  • Collaborate closely with shareholders, government, regulators and the supply chain to build consensus and secure the right conditions for project success.
  • Champion strong governance, ensuring accurate reporting, transparent decision-making and the consistent application of best practice across all commercial workstreams.

You have:

  • Extensive experience in the commercial management of large-scale, debt-financed infrastructure projects, ideally within energy, utilities or renewables, with international exposure and a proven ability to deliver complex, high-value outcomes.
  • Strong leadership capability, inspiring and developing multidisciplinary teams within complex or matrix environments, and fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Exceptional commercial and financial insight, with deep understanding of CAPEX/OPEX modelling, project financing, and revenue mechanisms such as CfDs, CPPAs and cap & floor arrangements.
  • Proven expertise in contract negotiation and administration, demonstrating a calm, solutions-focused approach to managing risk, resolving challenges, and optimising commercial outcomes.
  • Demonstrable experience of engaging and collaborating effectively with shareholders, government, regulators and supply chain partners, building trusted relationships that enable consensus and project success.
