About the Role

Base Location: Flexible, however our preference is that you will be based in one of our key UK or Ireland sites, which includes but is not limited to:- Glasgow, Perth, Aberdeen, Inverness, Reading, Havant, London, Belfast or Dublin

We have an exciting new opportunity for a Group Data Protection Officer to join SSE at a critical time of growth and international  expansion.  As a trusted advisor to the SSE Board, you'll maintain strategic oversight of Group activities, associated Data & Information Governance risks, and develop good working relationships with the ICO and other privacy regulators.

This senior leadership role would suit a candidate with a strong legal and/or data protection background, who can operate effectively across the organisation to provide innovative and appropriate solutions to complex business issues.

Un addition to the above, your key responsibilities will include:-

- Partnering with the SSE businesses to provide expert legal advice on policy, best practice and risks related to privacy, and data protection regarding personal data.  This will involve working collaboratively with senior stakeholders to promote compliance in the achievement of business objectives.

- Developing the data protection strategy, implementing key initiatives and processes in order to set standards and reinforce a culture of integrity, quality, responsibility and ethical behaviour across all Group subsidiaries in the UK and internationally.

- Cooperating with the appropriate jurisdictions' data protection regulators, acting as the key point of contact for issues relating to processing, failure with compliance or personal data protection breaches. 

- Attending and facilitating various internal and external forums and Steering Groups, using your expertise and industry insight to ensure all relevant matters are highlighted and discussed.  This may include inputting to business development activity, the implementation of new systems or processes, or any other ad hoc activities that require DPO input in the delivery of our strategy.

- As a member of the General Counsel Leadership team, managing and supporting a high performing, specialist team, as well as contributing the implementation of operational initiatives, data governance considerations and improvements.

What do I need?

To be considered for this role, we'd love you to have:-

- Expert knowledge of data protection laws and practices e.g. GDPR, UK GDPR, Data Protection Acts coupled with demonstrable experience of providing high quality and effective private and data protection advice, across the organisation.

- A good understanding of the energy sector is preferred, as is experience of operating across different geographical jurisdictions, with different privacy standards and policies to support of our international expansion.

- Ability to assess risks associated with data processing operations and act pragmatically, taking into account the nature, scope, context and purpose of processing.

- Ability to build effective partnerships, and quickly gain the trust of other executives, as well as externally.

- Strong leadership skills, with the ability to build a high performing team who are engaged, motivated and inspired to continually add value in the delivery of business objectives.
