About the Role
Base Location: Flexible UK & Ireland | We're proud to offer a Flexible First approach to work, and this role is no exception. We will, however need your base 'home' location to be one of our SSE offices or depots around the UK and Ireland.
Salary: £46,100 - £69,100 + car allowance + performance-related bonus + a range of other benefits to support your family, finances and wellbeing.

Reporting to the SSE Thermal Senior Environmental Manager the SSE Thermal Environment Manager will support the SSE Group in their endeavours to keep people, the environment and assets safe.
A management position within the Thermal SHE Function, and a lead role across the wider SSE Environment community as a whole, with responsibility for improving environmental performance and reducing SSE’s exposure to environmental risk at both an operational and a strategic level.
- Providing expert guidance to all levels of the organisation across the entire life cycle of our SSE Thermal Assets (i.e. from initial concept stage through, development, construction, operation and ultimately decommissioning and demolition)
- Providing Environmental Governance and assurance to the Thermal SHEC and EXCO to ensure transparency on the effectiveness of our Management systems..
- Representing SSE Thermal on both national and international forums, working with stakeholders to ensure that SSE Thermal understands and can mitigate the potential risk of a changing environment and associated legal framework.
- Supporting in the development and delivery of the SSE Thermal Environmental Strategy and taking ownership of key areas.
- Reviewing environmental project risks for projects within the scope of the SSE Large Capital Projects Governance Framework.
What do I need?
To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:
- A detailed understanding of legislation, regulation, and environmental risks across SSE Thermal’s diverse operations and geographical jurisdictions; and the ability to research and understand the requirements and implications of specific regulations as required and be highly competent at recognising, evaluating and mitigating environmental risks on highly complex projects.
- The competence to analyse and evaluate complex and competing environmental and business issues and sets practical, balanced, and sustainable solutions for SSE Thermal.
- Previous experience in supporting Projects through Environmental Permitting and/or Planning as well as competent in developing and delivering audit regimes, comprising scope of plan (in conjunction with businesses), protocols, reporting and close-out.
- A proactive approach to engage in Group-wide or cross-business projects to enhance risk management and deliver operational efficiency whilst also proactively engaging with site manager, project manager and other environmental professionals to ensure all environmental risks are understood.
- A dynamic approach that can be flexible to business need, you will need the ability to self prioritize work and the confidence to manage the expectation of others when injected work is required.
- Undergraduate qualification in environmental, scientific engineering and/or sufficient industry experience.
About our Business
In SSE Thermal, we're responsible for SSE's flexible generation, energy-from-waste and energy storage activities, with over 600 direct employees across the UK and Ireland. We are currently commissioning the 910MW Keadby 2 CCGT in North Lincolnshire, which is expected to become the cleanest and most efficient gas-fired power station in Europe when completed in 2022. As part of our commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions, we have a core focus on decarbonising our fleet through carbon capture and storage (CCS) and hydrogen technology. We are actively developing projects in the Humber and Scotland, which could become the UK's first CCS-equipped power stations, while also exploring exciting opportunities in low-carbon hydrogen production, generation and storage.
