What is the Role?
As a Connections Designer, your role is a pivotal one, helping to ensure Guaranteed Standards are met when providing quotations for new connections for customers. By providing customer with designs and quotations for both import and export connections to our network, you ensure we are delivering the highest level of service.
Your projects will be varied, and will involve large housing and industrial developments, with capacities in excess of 250kVA. The capacities you will design will predominantly be between 250kVA and 5MW, and will connect to the 11kV network. Projects may also include the connection of distributed generation equipment.
Due to the regulated nature of our business, all timescales set for our connections projects are heavily monitored, and therefore must be produced and issued to customers within the Guaranteed Standards timescales. In line with regulation, all our designs must be compliant with all appropriate rules and regulations in place, as well as meeting all engineering specifications and financial targets.
Your Skills and Experience
To ensure you get the most from your role, and our customers receive the highest standard of service, we ask that you have the following skills and experience:
- Excellent working knowledge of both low and high voltage distribution and Power Systems networks, with an ability to create designs which promote safety throughout. If you have a relevant electrical qualification that would be great, however equivalent work experience is also accepted.
- You'll be a strong communicator, with excellent organisation skills and a strength in developing and nourishing positive working relationships.
- You'll have the opportunity to visit your clients, therefore, a valid UK driving licence is also required.
- If you have experience within PROMIS, GIS and SIMS technology that's an added bonus, but if not, you should have a flair for picking up and working with new IT systems.
- Last but certainly not least, you'll have a special appreciation for safety, and ensuring our safety values are at the forefront of your working.
The successful applicant will Ideally have a relevant qualification in Power Distribution (HNC or above) and a good knowledge of the Electricity Distribution Network. Knowledge of SSE IT packages used to analyse the electrical network. General Computing skills. Good customer service and communication skills are essential.

Our SSEN Distribution Commercial and Connections teams are the first point of contact for customers wishing to have a new electricity connection, increase the size of their existing connection, install generation, or move the equipment supplying their property. We're here to help whether our customers are building a single home, housing development, industrial development, generation development or independent distribution network.
