Base Location: Flexible UK & Ireland | We're proud to offer a Flexible First approach to work, and this role is no exception. We will, however, need your base 'home' location to be one of our SSE offices or depots around the UK and Ireland.

The SSE Digital Services team is strengthening its capability in Energy-as-a-Service – we’re targeting rapid growth in this part of the business, and beginning a transformation process focusing on smart energy solutions that encompass energy assets such as generation and storage, load and control systems such as Virtual Power Plants (VPP) and smart grid (generation, storage and load); all of which are automatically controlled by our Enhance platform for trading/balancing purposes.

The Optimisation Origination manager. role is an opportunity to join SSE Distributed Energy at an exciting time. We are passionate in what we do and have a real desire to support our customers in the journey to nett zero. As well as targeting >2GW of our own Storage and solar projects we aim to be a trusted provider of solutions to external customers. Our new platform, SSE Enhance, is a combined Virtual Power Plant and Smart Grid platform that facilitates trading and balancing capabilities as well as aggregation, that will form a core part of our Energy-as-a-Service proposition.

  • You’ll be responsible for leading the business development and commercialisation of this proposition with an initial focus on securing contracts for flexibility trading (VPP) services with assets owners and developers across the UK. Primary focus on Battery and flexible assets, both Behind and Front of the meter.
  • The role will work closely with other internal teams to ensure market opportunities are captured, developing trends are understood and customer needs are met, all whilst managing complex internal stakeholders. 
  • The role holder would originate new leads/prospects; support and upsell to existing customers, and act as the main client interface throughout any engagement including leading negotiations all the way through to contract signature.

What do I need?

To be considered for this role you’ll need:

- to be a driven and passionate customer focussed individual, intent on exceeding budget targets

- to be a leader of self; passionate and ethically driven with a desire to support the decarbonisation of our society

- An understanding of flexibility markets including UK energy trading, balancing markets and ancillary services. Knowledge of Irish and European markets an advantage.

- Experienced business developer within energy flexibility services, with an understanding of Virtual Power Plants VPP, Demand-Side-Response (DSR) and Energy-as-a-service (EaaS)

- Good understanding of commercial asset operations for Batteries, Peakers, solar, CHP, Heat Networks

- Good understanding of Revenue Models, commercial and contractual structures within Distributed Energy and local integrated energy systems

- Comfortable with calculating commercial opportunity (and risk) models be able to articulate in simple terms to internal and external stakeholders

- Experience in the UK Energy sector, ideally within Distributed Energy and flexibility.
