SSE Heat Network’s vision is to become the most trusted zero carbon heat network developer and operator in the UK .

We design, build, finance and operate low carbon heating, cooling and power networks.  As well as responding to tendered opportunities, we also develop our own projects aiming to build the new heat networks infrastructure which will support the UK’s transition to Net Zero.

An opportunity to join The Asset Operations team as Asset Manager for the Heat Networks division. The Asset Operations team within SSE Energy Solutions operates many types of complex Distributed Energy networks. This includes the operation of several Heat networks around the UK distributing heat, cooling, and electricity to our customers. Operating these networks over their whole life in an efficient and effective manner is core to our overall Operational, Financial and Commercial success. The Heat Networks Asset Manager role is at the heart of realising this success by ensuring that we have the right asset management in place to ensure that all the Heat Networks are performing to the best of their ability.


A key part of this role will be ensuring the right information and data is generated and interpreted so that we can then make informed decisions around future operating and maintenance and plant replacement strategies on our networks. Focus will be on maintaining a robust process for managing and delivering plant replacement. The role will work extensively with our key stakeholders within O&M, Commercial and Adoption to ensure that any factors that impact the effective operation of our networks are understood and actively managed.


The role will also be responsible for ensuring that our service providers perform fully and in line with our contractual arrangements with them. We will also need to ensure we are working collaboratively with them to ensure we are realising the full potential of their service offering.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • The Heat Networks Asset Manager should have a technical understanding and experience of building services and distributed energy technologies to support the wider team in owning, operating and replacing asset equipment
  • Facilitate the planning of capital replacement works or optimisation projects.
  • Ensure we meet our contractual obligations surrounding the management and use of the various forms of capital replacement provisions we are responsible for managing.
  • Support the Commercial team around the operational strategy and cost of operation within our 5-year financial models and bi-annual re-forecasts
  • Interface with the respective Stakeholders to ensure operational service delivery, resources, costs and planning are aligned with commercial and regulatory requirements for each utility asset.  


What do I need?

  • A recognised Engineering Qualification at Degree level or equivalent demonstrable experience
  • Chartered or working towards Chartership
  • SHEW Management – IOSH or equivalent
  • Strong knowledge of Asset management best practices
  • Commercial understanding around Asset Operation, risks and guarantees
  • Knowledge of CIBSE CP1 – Heat Networks Code of Practice
