I joined SSE in 2019 as I believed that I could progress my career aspirations.

Within 18 months of joining, I had secured a senior position within IT. Since joining, I have been able to obtain multiple professional qualifications and certifications.

With having a young family being able to work for a Company that truly embraces work life balance is important to me. During Covid when we had to contend with home schooling SSE allowed me to go offline for an hour during core hours to help my child complete their schoolwork.

As a Muslim I have religious obligations which must be undertaken throughout the day, SSE sites have facilities to support me in fulfilling my religious obligations. During Ramadan the option to work alternative hours were offered to help support me through the month.

My opinions are heard and taken on board and the culture here is one of development, support and taking care of people.

Jack Kelly, Senior Developer

I joined SSE in 2016 as an IT Degree Apprentice and gained valuable experience in vastly different placements while earning my BSc (Hons) in Digital and Technology Solutions (Software Engineering).

Now, I'm a Senior Developer in the Emerging Technologies Team, researching and delivering proofs of concept and demos for SSE.

I love collaborating with my team and colleagues across SSE, exploring technologies like AR, VR, AI, and wearables. SSE's greatest benefits for me are the care for my wellbeing, career development opportunities, and the Flexible First working approach.

I work in the Threat Detection and Response team, which handles cyber security events that threaten the company's systems and data.

Our team culture is fantastic - we have a diverse range of skills and always help each other out, while still finding time to have fun. Recently, we upgraded our SIEM provider, which enabled us to learn new skills like KQL. I've had many opportunities for professional development, including completing courses and exams, and being involved in initiatives like STEM education and Women in Tech.

I love working for SSE because of its culture, people, and opportunities. I've been here for ten years, and I hope to stay longer. With flexible working arrangements, I get the best of both worlds - collaboration with my team in person and remotely, and the comfort of working from home with my dog.

Pauline Aaron, IT Development Manager

I have been part of SSE for 16 years and I currently work as an IT Development Manager in Energy Customer Solutions IT. Our team develops, builds, and supports IT solutions.

I’ve had lots of opportunities at SSE and I have introduced initiatives like robotic process automation for automatic management of meter readings. I played a key role in IT for COP26, which saw lots of notable people such as Ellie Goulding, Deborah Meaden, and Boris Johnson add their electronic signatures on one of our wind turbines.

SSE is deeply committed to sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint, as well as supporting communities through initiatives like The Countryside Education Trust.

The flexible work arrangements mean that I can maintain a healthy work-life balance, which is really important to me. I am proud to be a part of SSE and look forward to the next 16 years.

Jonathan Orme, Senior Solution Architect

As a Senior Solution Architect in SSE's IT department, I oversee a diverse range of projects, from Microsoft tech to Mergers and Acquisitions.

My career at SSE began in 2009 as a C# developer, and the company has since invested in my professional growth, providing lots of opportunities for my personal development. Along the way, I have taken part in exciting activities such as climbing wind turbines in Ireland, descending beneath a hydroelectric dam in Scotland and scaling a pylon in England for a Virtual Reality project.

SSE's positive work culture centres around collaboration, innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability, supporting the company's commitment to delivering clean energy. With flexible work arrangements, a great work-life balance and a commitment to decarbonising our energy system for the benefit of the planet, I’m proud to work at SSE.
