Callum Craig - Commercial Graduate

Callum Craig - Commercial Graduate

First, tell us a bit about yourself! What programme did you join at SSE and where are you based?

I joined the SSE Commercial Graduate Programme in August 2019 after graduating from university in my native Scotland. My graduate scheme was based in Dublin, Ireland, where I chose to move to and where I remain today. I have now completed the Graduate Scheme and moved into a permanent job with SSE Airtricity.

What did you study at university?

I studied a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Glasgow. This was a 5-year integrated master’s which I started in 2014 and graduated in June 2019, moving straight into the Graduate Scheme with SSE Airtricity in the August of the same year.

Which sectors did you consider applying to for your graduate role? What made you choose SSE and the area you are now working in?

I applied to businesses within the engineering industry, particularly those within energy and HVAC, as I found great interest in renewable energy and thermodynamics whilst at university. However, SSE were my number one choice and were the first company I applied to when the graduate schemes began to open for applicants.

At the time, and still to this day, SSE had impressive green credentials and ambition to combat climate change by transitioning to renewable energies. This is what drew me to SSE, as I had ambitions to work somewhere where I could support the transition to a cleaner and safer future.

I chose to work with SSE in Dublin, partially as my girlfriend is Irish and lives here, but also as a challenge to myself to leave my home in Scotland, and I am lucky that SSE operates in both the UK and in Ireland!

How did you find the recruitment process?

The recruitment process had several steps and was straightforward, but challenging, as it should be. The first few steps were online tests before a video interview stage which was then followed by the assessment centre, a half-day in an SSE office that includes a formal interview, a group exercise and a 10-minute presentation on a given topic. For me, this was then followed up by a final call by a senior leader and the recruitment team in the location I applied to. I found the process challenging, particularly the video interview as it was the first one I had ever completed. The assessment centre itself required teamwork skills and individual preparedness but was a rewarding experience.

Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programmes?

For advice to students, I would suggest researching SSE as much as possible, particularly looking at our values and safety culture that is pivotal to our daily work. Research climate change and why we must tackle it, and what SSE are doing to combat this. In addition, prepare as best possible for both the video and formal interviews by perhaps preparing your own questions and answers, and maybe get someone to ask them to you.

Did you require any adjustments during the selection process?

In my case, I did not require any adjustments during the selection process. Additionally, I was fortunate to apply for SSE and begin my career pre-Covid. However, I believe that SSE will be happy to provide any support necessary to applicants to support them throughout the application process.

Tell us a bit about your current role?

I have completed the Graduate Scheme and moved into a permanent role within SSE Airtricity, beginning my new role as a Commercial Analyst in April 2021. I am currently in the Commercial Directorate of SSE Airtricity with my role responsibilities including developing insights and analysis on the commercial aspects of the business; developing performance reports and analysis; analysing our competitors and the market; developing models to forecast various commercial scenarios; and much more!

Along the way I have learnt many things, including improving my Microsoft Excel skills tenfold! I have also gained a greater understanding of the commercial aspects of business, the processes through which we acquire and retain customers, and enhanced my overall understanding of the energy industry; from what the major movements are to the nuances of hedging energy.

Throughout all of this, what I have most enjoyed is the inclusive nature of SSE, where everyone is happy to talk to you and have time to speak to you. Colleagues are always welcoming when you move to a new team and are also happy to help when you need some! It’s a great culture and an excellent place to work.

Anything else to add?

SSE are an excellent company with an impressive track record of developing and operating renewable energy generation. We have an inclusive culture with safety our number one priority and ambitions to support the transition to a better world of energy.

The graduate scheme is an excellent opportunity to develop and learn, especially with the chance to move between placements in various business units or teams. This provides a holistic view of the business unit that graduates are part of and allows each graduate the opportunity to meet many people and build a network. There are also plenty of excellent graduate specific opportunities and training sessions which are great for meeting with and networking with peers; whilst also improving skills along the way!

Rowanne Simpson - IT Graduate

Rowanne Simpson - IT Graduate

First, tell us a bit about yourself! What programme did you join at SSE and where are you based?

My name is Rowanne Simpson, I joined the Technology Graduate Scheme at SSE in September 2020 and I am based in Perth.

What did you study at university?

I studied MSci Mathematics at Lancaster University (2016-2020)

Which sectors did you consider applying to for your graduate role? What made you choose SSE and the area you are now working in?

It was on a summer internship that I developed an interest in technology however I considered a wide range of sectors when applying for a technology graduate scheme. I ultimately chose SSE because it is acknowledged as a fair and inclusive employer, something that I value highly and I wanted to be a part of SSE's journey in reaching a low carbon future. The Technology Graduate Scheme offers the opportunity to move across various business units, providing exposure to various aspects of the energy industry while building on experience in different IT roles.

How did you find the recruitment process? Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programmes?

The recruitment process has several stages and throughout the process, I felt supported. I would suggest do your research via the SSE website if you are new to the energy industry as there is a lot of information there. Practice online tests until you feel comfortable with them and take your time and prepare for each stage.

Did you require any adjustments during the selection process and would you be happy to share what support you received.

Yes, I required extra time during the online tests and the group exercise at the assessment centre.

Tell us a bit about your current role?

I'm currently in my second 6-month placement which is as a Business Analyst in SSE Business Energy IT. This role has allowed me to engage with various stakeholders in the business, and I have to say my favourite part is the people in the team.

Hannah Adamson - Commercial Graduate

Hannah Adamson - Commercial Graduate

First, tell us a bit about yourself! What programme did you join at SSE and where are you based?

I am Hannah Adamson and I am a Business and Commercial Graduate within the Thermal Business. I joined SSE in September 2020 and my base location is Perth.

What did you study at university?

I studied Geology and Physical Geography (BSc) at The University of Edinburgh and graduated in 2017.

Which sectors did you consider applying to for your graduate role? What made you choose SSE and the area you are now working in?

I chose to apply to SSE for 3 main reasons. The first being their ability to be an active contributor to climate goals for the UK and worldwide, and their clear ambition to do so. The second being their status as a fair and inclusive employer. And the final one being the location of their offices, being based in Perth allows easy access to the vast Scottish Highlands.

How did you find the recruitment process? Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programmes?

I felt well informed through the recruitment process with an understanding of what the next step would be and advice on how to prepare for it, and results / feedback from each stage were communicated in a timely manner. My main piece of advice would be to fully research the company, including the business areas you are not applying to. This will give you a fuller view of SSE’s wider goals, and how your chosen business area fits into the bigger strategic picture. It is also worth aligning your specific experience to each of the SSE values.

Tell us a bit about your current role?

I spent the first 8 months of the graduate programme in the Thermal Revenue Optimisation team where I was focussing on the capacity mechanism in Ireland and GB and how to optimise the assets we have in the current GB and Irish power markets. My 2nd placement has been in Gas Storage where I have been offering analytical assistance to the trading desk and the commercial team whilst understanding the gas market and how it interacts with European and global influences. Both teams have been welcoming and have offered support for areas in which I had no prior knowledge or experience. I have really enjoyed gaining an in-depth knowledge of these complex markets.

Grant Beaton - Engineering Graduate

Grant Beaton - Engineering Graduate

First, tell us a bit about yourself! What programme did you join at SSE and where are you based?

I’m Grant Beaton, an SSE Renewables Graduate Engineer based in Glasgow having joined the company in September 2020.

What did you study at university?

I studied a 5-year integrated Masters in Electrical & Mechanical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, graduating in the summer of 2020.

Which sectors did you consider applying to for your graduate role? What made you choose SSE and the area you are now working in?

I had a keen interest in renewables throughout my time at university, howeve, it was the latter years where we moved past the purely technical analysis in class to real-world engineering issues where I found it to be the most engaging and exciting topic. To me, renewables seemed the most ethical, innovative, and secure industry to work in and SSE as a company mirrored these qualities.

How did you find the recruitment process? Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programmes?

The recruitment process was competitive which is why it’s important to prepare well for it. My main piece of advice would be to spend time practising the initial online tests before jumping into the real deal. A lot of very similar mock tests can be found easily online and scoring highly in these will ensure you make it to the next round of the process. Passed that stage, you’ll be able to let your personality and passion for the renewable energy industry show in an in-person or video interview.

Tell us a bit about your current role?

As a graduate, I have been moving around different teams within the business, which has helped me gain a more rounded knowledge of the industry. So far, I’ve worked on Hydro, Offshore and Onshore Wind projects, as well as working in the electrical engineering and risk management teams. It’s been brilliant to have gained experience working on so many of the huge projects SSE are developing only a year into my professional career.

Are you working towards a professional qualification?

I’m currently working toward my IET chartership status. SSE has been really proactive at helping us try to achieve this by setting up a mentorship program, which pairs graduates with experienced chartered engineers within the company. With this, we can seek advice not only on aspects to do with chartership but on how best to make the most of the unique opportunities we as graduates have to move around the different business areas. It’s been great to get advice throughout about how to tailor the graduate program around my own interests and skills I’m looking to further develop.

Gordon Rae - Renewable Energy Graduate

Gordon Rae - Renewable Energy Graduate

First, tell us a bit about yourself! What programme did you join at SSE and where are you based?

I joined the Renewable Energy Graduate Programme in January ’21. I worked remotely from London for 6-months before moving to Glasgow to join SSE’s Waterloo Street office.

What did you study at university?

I studied as an undergraduate in Civil Engineering followed by a PGDip in Sustainability and finally a MEng in Renewable Energy. In total this was 6-years of studying, I completed my studies in 2019.

Which sectors did you consider applying to for your graduate role? What made you choose SSE and the area you are now working in?

During my Post Graduate studies, it became very clear that I wanted to work in Renewable Energy (RE). SSE was so attractive to me because, in my opinion, they simply had the best Renewable Energy Graduate Programme on offer (globally). When I initially started looking for work, I kept my job searching lens relatively small and only searched the South African Market. With the limited opportunities for RE grads in South Africa, I decided to open my job searching lens to the Global Market. When I came across SSE’s Renewable Energy Graduate Programme, I was highly impressed and almost instantaneously sold given the flexibility and range of experience on offer within SSE’s Grad Programme.

How did you find the recruitment process? Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programmes?

I was very impressed with SSE’s intricate and thorough recruitment process. In hindsight, the advice I would have given myself is to approach all stages of the application process with your full concentration, dedication, and energy. Applicants should ensure that they are in the correct headspace and completely focused on the task at hand before completing any of the recruitment stages. Additionally, I advise taking the time to get to know SSE as an organisation and then strategically reflecting these learnings throughout your application process.

Did you require any adjustments during the selection process?

Given the fact that I am South African, I was in a position where I required SSE to sponsor my UK Tier 2 working visa. SSE really came to the party in giving me all the assistance that I required with both my visa application and my relocation to the UK. I was honestly blown away by the level of support and commitment SSE has given me throughout the entire visa application and relocation process.

Tell us a bit about your current role?

I am so pleased with my decision to join SSEs Renewable Energy Graduate Programme. I love the flexibility we have been given to steer our placements in line with our interests. The opportunity to gain such a diverse range of experience whilst exponentially growing my professional network at such an early stage in my career has been a huge highlight of mine.

Are you working towards a professional qualification?

I am working towards my CEng status through the IET. SSE has been great in ensuring that I receive a diverse range of experience in order to fast track my journey to Chartership.

Caitlin McCluskie - Commercial Graduate

Caitlin McCluskie - Commercial Graduate

First, tell us a bit about yourself! What programme did you join at SSE and where are you based?

I joined the SSE Business and Commercial Graduate Programme in September 2020. I am based out of the Glasgow office.

What did you study at university?

I graduated from the University of the West of Scotland in 2020 with a Bachelor of Accounts with honours.

Which sectors did you consider applying to for your graduate role? What made you choose SSE and the area you are now working in?

As I have an accounting degree/background, I also applied for graduate roles based in the finance industry. I chose SSE as the graduate programme stood out from others I had applied for due to the opportunity to work in a wide range of teams and for the career progression / opportunities available. Also, the industry and business area stood out from other places I applied to as the push for net zero becomes an increasing focus of legislation and countries around the world, which I had begun to research as part of my dissertation.

How did you find the recruitment process? Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programmes?

The recruitment process was challenging but this made it stimulating and thought provoking, as most graduate processes are (this is not a bad thing). The SSE one was a stand-out from others due to how well communicated each stage of the process was. The various stages were well explained and hosted on platforms that were easy to navigate. It is good to research SSE in general, with a particular focus on our net zero journey, not just in terms of our renewable portfolio (wind and hydro), but other projects we are doing to achieve this (EVs / Smart Cities etc).

Tell us a bit about your current role?

I am 1 year into the Business and Commercial Graduate Programme. I have worked in renewables and business energy as part of my first-year placements. This gave me a very good understating of the business as it allowed me to learn about our current portfolio and new projects we have in the pipeline while I was in renewables but when I moved to the business energy side of SSE (the customer facing aspect), it allowed me to see the opposite end from renewables. I had seen how we generated and used our assets and then had the opportunity to see how it is sold / passed on to customers. This role is great as you get exposure to multiple teams and business areas. For me, the most enjoyable part is being able to get involved in lots of different projects across various businesses in SSE. We have such a great opportunity to move around and experience more than one area of the business.

Anything else to add?

I applied for lots of grad schemes while at uni and at a first glance the SSE programme was not as obvious a fit for me as finance / accounting related programmes, which made me nervous and apprehensive about applying. However, in the early weeks of starting this programme, it became clear that this programme was excellent and that I was very lucky to be accepted onto the programme. I couldn’t imagine myself on another grad programme, even ones that might have fit more traditionally with my university background.

David Watkins - IT Graduate

David Watkins - IT Graduate

First, tell us a bit about yourself! What programme did you join at SSE and where are you based?

My name is David Watkins, I joined the Technology Graduate Scheme at SSE in September 2019 and I am based in Havant, Portsmouth.

What did you study at university?

I am still doing university alongside the graduate programme. But I am currently studying a BSc in Computing, IT and Business through the Open University. I started in October of 2017, took a little break but back on it full time since last year.

Which sectors did you consider applying to for your graduate role? What made you choose SSE and the area you are now working in?

This was the first sector I looked at applying for a graduate programme. I strongly agreed with SSE’s journey in a low carbon future and working towards Net Zero. The reason I chose SSE was that I was already working for the company on the retail side of the business. My passion has always been for IT so when I saw there was an opportunity to explore a career in that field of work I applied for the programme.

How did you find the recruitment process? Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programmes?

I was quite shocked as I wasn’t aware of the multiple processes I had to go through before the final interviews, but I did like the idea of each chapter of the interview process building on from the last. In terms of advice, read up on the company and the kind of work they do before applying for the role. Understanding the employer’s goals and milestones so far will also give you a competitive step when applying for the programme.

Did you require any adjustments during the selection process?

I did not require any adjustments during the selection process, however, I knew there were options available to me if I needed them.

Tell us a bit about your current role?

I am now off the graduate programme working as an Analyst Developer. Currently, I am doing a lot of work relating to the Microsoft Power Platform and how we can use this to improve and automate current processes within the business, adding value to the business where possible.

Are you working towards a professional qualification?

Other than my degree, I am working towards Microsoft certifications, for the Power platform and Azure. My manager and team are very supportive of me getting these certifications.

Anything else to add?

I learned throughout my time on the graduate programme about a passion I did not know I had until I was in the right placement with the right manager. SSE are great at finding an employee’s strong suits and encouraging them to push for greatness. I wasn’t very confident about programming when I first started the scheme, but I’ve come out the other end a lot more confident and ready to take on new challenges.

Hamza Abedrabbo - Engineering Graduate

Hamza Abedrabbo - Engineering Graduate

First, tell us a bit about yourself! What programme did you join at SSE and where are you based?

I am 25 years old, Jordanian and an Electrical Engineer. I joined the Engineering Graduate programme in September 2020 and I am currently based in Glasgow.

What did you study at university?

I studied Electrical Engineering at the University of Jordan and graduated in 2019. I achieved an MSc degree in Electrical Power & Energy Systems from the University of Strathclyde in 2020.

Which sectors did you consider applying to for your graduate role? What made you choose SSE and the area you are now working in?

Utility and Energy Sectors. I chose SSE as it is one of the leading companies in the energy industry in the UK. As the renewable generation industry is on the rise, north of Scotland’s transmission network is very vital to achieve the 2050 net zero carbon emissions target. Thus, in my opinion, SSEN is the best career choice for me to gain experience as an Electrical engineer who is enthusiastic about power systems and specifically transmission networks, as it allows me to be part of a righteous movement towards the environment.

How did you find the recruitment process? Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programmes?

I have found it reasonable and fair. I would advise the students to do their research on the company, be themselves and talk of their own experiences from University, school and life.

Tell us a bit about your current role?

I lie within the asset management department and I am currently working with the asset condition and engineering team (ACE). In the ACE team, we are looking into developing testing strategies and building an online monitoring system for fixed assets such as transformers, bushings and circuit breakers. The aim is to develop a system capable of predicting the faults occurring in assets and preventing those faults from happening through a condition based maintenance strategy.

Are you working towards a professional qualification?

I am currently in the process of becoming a chartered engineer, which is a very important qualification for engineers, and I have a mentor who guides me through my chartership application.

Jack Ferrans - Engineering Graduate

Jack Ferrans - Engineering Graduate

First, tell us a bit about yourself! What programme did you join at SSE and where are you based?

I’m Jack Ferrans and joined the SSE grad scheme in September of 2021, coming to the end of my first year. I joined the Transmission grad scheme and I'm a Graduate Project Engineer based in Glasgow.

What did you study at university?

I studied an MEng in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering with International Study at the University of Strathclyde and graduated in 2021, the same year I started SSE.

Which sectors did you consider applying to for your graduate role? What made you choose SSE and the area you are now working in?

With the classes I had taken in university and the work experience I had taken part in, I knew that I wanted to work in the energy industry. I wanted to work with a large company and with SSEN being only one of three transmission owners in the UK, I knew SSE would be a good fit. SSE specifically grabbed my attention as there is a plethora of work upcoming in SSEN’s network area and there is a great work / life balance. It is an exciting time to be involved in the industry.

How did you find the recruitment process? Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programme?

A fair and ‘quick’ process. I submitted my application and didn’t hear anything for quite a few weeks, however, after the first contact from the SSE, the process was quick and flowed seamlessly. My advice would be to do research on the company – this can provide talking points in interview.

Tell us a bit about your current role?

I am a graduate project engineer specifically looking at substations. My favourite part of the job role is being involved in real projects and being out on site. I really enjoy the balance my job role has between office-based activities and attending sites all around Scotland.

Are you working towards a professional qualification?

I am working towards my IET Chartership. I have a chartership mentor who not only is chartered herself, but is also a senior member in the business and is able to help guide my career to aid in meeting chartership goals and objectives. We meet monthly and she is always available at other times too. There is also a financial incentive to gain chartership if completed within a certain timeframe.

Jack Stewart - Land & Consents Graduate

Becoming a land and consents graduate at SSE

Jack wanted a career where his work would have a positive real-world impact. Find out more about why he chose the SSE land and consents graduate programme.

First, tell us a bit about yourself! What programme did you join at SSE and where are you based?

My name is Jack, I am 26 years old, and I am from Dundee. In September 2021 I joined SSE Renewables as a Consents Advisor Graduate based in Glasgow.

What did you study at university?

I started my undergraduate degree in Law at the University of Glasgow in 2014 and graduated in 2018. I returned to the University of Glasgow in 2019 to complete a MSc in Economic Development.

Which sectors did you consider applying to for your graduate role? What made you choose SSE and the area you are now working in?

I was interested in a wide variety of sectors and roles when applying for graduate positions. The most important thing for me was to be in a role where I would feel good about the work I was doing and where the work would have a positive real-world impact. This role excited me because it is in an industry which I believe to be very important where the work we are doing is helping to address possibly the most important crisis faced by humanity in the 21st century.

How did you find the recruitment process? Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programmes?

The recruitment process was lengthy and challenging. I found the recorded video interview to be particularly difficult, where the lack of another person on the other end of the conversation made speaking feel very unnatural. I would advise people applying for programmes and placements at SSE to keep going even when they feel the requirements are demanding or that something has not gone well. I find that you usually have done better than you may have expected and the reward of a job at SSE is well worth the effort that it takes to get through the process.

Tell us a bit about your current role?

As a Consents Advisor, I work on the consent team for different SSE projects. Consents plays a crucial role in project development because if a project is unable to achieve consented status, it cannot be constructed. I have learned about many different things that I had little knowledge of before starting this role, such as the way wind energy impacts and interacts with the environment. I also have loved how the role has given me the opportunity to travel to SSE sites and attend events around the country.

Are you working towards a professional qualification?

I hope to soon start working towards accreditation as an Environmentalist with IEMA.

Rachel Smyth - Land & Consents Graduate

Finding a non-engineering role in renewables

Rachel wanted to work in energy but wasn't sure what graduate programme would be right for her as she didn't have an engineering background. Find out more about her journey.

First, tell us a bit about yourself! What programme did you join at SSE and where are you based?

My name is Rachel, I am 23 years old, from Glasgow. I joined SSE Renewables as a Graduate Consents Advisor in September 2021.

What did you study at university?

I studied Geography and Sustainable Development at the University of St. Andrews. I started my degree in 2017 and graduated in 2021.

Which sectors did you consider applying to for your graduate role? What made you choose SSE and the area you are now working in?

I applied to many roles around sustainability and renewable energy. I found there wasn’t many renewable energy graduate roles outside of engineering, so was very pleased to see the SSE graduate programme. I chose SSE as it is excelling in the renewable energy industry as a leading developer and making real life changes to tackling the pressing issue of climate change.

How did you find the recruitment process? Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programmes?

The recruitment process is lengthy and difficult but not overly different to other companies in the industry. I think it’s very important to go in prepared and do background research. I personally found the testing part the hardest and therefore liked doing the interviews more, as you are able to have a conversation and portray your experience. Although there are a number of stages in the recruitment process, I wouldn’t be put off by this as it is a great learning curve.

Did you require any adjustments during the selection process?

I received extra time during the testing stage as I have dyslexia and therefore it takes me longer to process information. The team were very good at making sure the right adjustments were put in place and having that extra time really made a difference.

Tell us a bit about your current role?

As a Graduate Consents Advisor, I have had amazing opportunities to work on wind and hydro developments. Some of these are up there with the largest in the world and we are able to join these projects and gain so much knowledge. Consenting is a critical part of renewables, without having consent these wind farm or hydro scheme developments can’t be constructed. I have really enjoyed the site visits and being able to travel to lots of SSER sites across Scotland and attended conferences across the UK. This graduate program is a great way of moving around different placements and projects, gaining insight into lots of different renewable energy developments.

Are you working towards a professional qualification?

Not yet, however we are hoping to start working towards accreditation as an Environmentalist with IEMA.

Yootha Yong - Finance Graduate

Why I chose the energy industry as a finance graduate

Yootha talks about what made her choose energy as an industry and what appealed to her about the SSE finance graduate programme.

First, tell us a bit about yourself! What programme did you join at SSE and where are you based?

I’m in the Finance Graduate Scheme and I joined in 2021, based in Glasgow.

What did you study at university?

I studied Economics at the London School of Economics and Political Science, then completed an MSc in Economics at the University of Exeter in 2021. I joined SSE shortly after finishing my masters.

Which sectors did you consider applying to for your graduate role? What made you choose SSE and the area you are now working in?

I had my options open, however, I had a keen interest in the energy sector. I chose SSE as the graduate scheme was highly attractive and offered the opportunity to train as a Chartered Accountant in their Finance Graduate Scheme, specifically as a Graduate Accountancy Trainee through multiple rotations in finance functions across the Group.

How did you find the recruitment process? Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programmes?

It was a smooth recruitment process, and the interviews were a great opportunity to pitch yourself and learn more about the teams. Take this chance to learn more about the company and the role and be yourself. There is plenty of support throughout the recruitment process as the recruiters are always happy to answer my questions or point me to the right person for my query!

Tell us a bit about your current role?

I’ve just started a new rotation in a different department. In my previous department, my role had a strong accounting focus and I had the opportunity to work on different tasks across the Finance sub-teams in the department. In addition, I worked alongside other graduates across the Group on a Graduate Sustainability Project, where we presented a winning project that champions SSE’s values with a strong focus on sustainability. These competencies helped me strengthen my knowledge and professional development in studying for the CA qualification and have greatly contributed to my career development. Besides technical training, there are other internal training opportunities offered, focusing on soft skills. I’ve learnt so much in such a short period, but the best part about the programme is taking up impactful work alongside bright graduates and colleagues who are extremely supportive and friendly!

Are you working towards a professional qualification?

There are a number of accounting and finance professionals across the Group who are chartered and it is often comforting to know that they have been through the same process as well. There is support from both ends internally through SSE and through the institute we train in. There is a Training Principal within SSE who will have oversight over the programme too. The Finance Graduates have regular catch ups as well, so in a nutshell there is plenty of support all around.

Pamela McKnight-Gardner - Finance Graduate

Choosing a finance graduate programme that really counts

Pamela talks about why she chose SSE and what she thinks of finance programme so far.

First, tell us a bit about yourself! What programme did you join at SSE and where are you based?

My name’s Pamela and I joined SSE in 2021 as part of the finance graduate scheme. I’m based in Glasgow.

What did you study at university?

I studied Accounting and Finance at the University of Glasgow.

Which sectors did you consider applying to for your graduate role? What made you choose SSE and the area you are now working in?

The Big draw for me is the work environment that SSE encourages – it’s very supportive, particularly in the journey to becoming a professional accountant.

How did you find the recruitment process? Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programmes?

The recruitment process was challenging (in a good way!). I found it a beneficial experience and a good first step of easing into the grad programme.

Tell us a bit about your current role?

My first placement was within Renewables Finance for a year working within the Joint Ventures team. I really enjoyed my first year of the grad programme. I got great exposure to Renewable finance and enjoyed working with encouraging, knowledgeable and supportive people. There was a variety of work within this placement, and it really helped put into practice what I have learnt in theory at university and ICAS.

Are you working towards a professional qualification?

I’m currently working towards an ICAS qualification which will allow me to become a Chartered Accountant. I’ve received a great amount of support for this through study days and experiences shared from colleagues that have gone through the same qualification. Everyone is always more than happy to help when asked and offer advice and support.

Jessica PI - Engineering Graduate

From Venezuela to Glasgow - my journey as a SSE engineering graduate

Halfway through her studies, Jessica realised that renewable energy was the space she wanted to work in. Find out more about her experience as an engineering graduate so far.

First, tell us a bit about yourself! What did you study at university? Where are you based and did you relocate for the grad programme?

I am Jessica Pi, a 2nd year SSE Renewables Graduate Engineer. I studied Geophysical Engineering at the Universidad Central de Venezuela, graduating in 2021. After packing my bags (and a whole lot of arepas), I relocated from Caracas, Venezuela, to Glasgow.

Which sectors did you consider applying to for your graduate role? What made you choose SSE Renewables?

As a geophysical engineer from a country like mine, oil and gas was practically the only song I heard throughout my studies. But halfway through, I realised that renewable energies aligned more with my values and the future I wanted to help shape.

I choose SSE because the Graduate Scheme offered me the opportunity to learn while working for two years, which felt like hitting the career jackpot. On a recent graduate perspective this is extremely beneficial because you have the chance to experience different areas, teams, work packages and tailor your path based on highly valuable hands-on experience. I can say that I choose SSE because it offered me the opportunity to learn how to be an engineer.

How did you find the recruitment process? Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programmes?

It was challenging but doable, especially with a bit of practice for online tests. My tip: research SSE like its your favourite show —immerse yourself in their vision, goals, and purpose, and see if they align with yours. Be honest about your passions, even if your English isn’t perfect (spoiler: mine wasn’t). SSE values authenticity so show them the real you, awkward jokes and all!

Tell us a bit about your experience on the graduate programme, including any placement highlights and opportunities.

So far, I have done four placements during the grad scheme. Three of them involved Geoscience so I had the opportunity to learn from geotechnical and geophysical engineering mostly. I’ve spent time on training, reviewing reports, visiting sites and survey vessels.

One of the most exciting projects was with the Ground Engineering team at Coire Glas. Picture this: I had the chance to be up in the highlands, working and learning about geotechnical engineering and tunnel construction while witnessing Scotland’s stunning landscapes. Doesn’t sound bad, right?

This project was recently named Ground Investigation Project of the Year at the Ground Engineering Awards, and its incredible to think I got to be part of something that big, learning from the best minds in the field and getting hands-on experience.

Christopher Chan - Engineering Graduate

Becoming a project engineer at SSE Renewables

Christopher talks about why he chose SSE Renewables and what life is like now he has completed the engineering graduate programme.

First, tell us a bit about yourself! What did you study at university? Where are you based and did you relocate for the grad programme?

I'm Christopher Chan and I joined the company for the Renewables Graduate Programme in September 2022. I am now a project engineer with SSE Renewables. Before SSE, I studied at the University of Edinburgh for MSc Sustainable Energy Systems and I relocated from Edinburgh to Glasgow for the programme.

Which sectors did you consider applying to for your graduate role? What made you choose SSE Renewables?

I mainly considered the energy sector because of what I studied. I chose SSE Renewables because, as an international student, SSER is not as strict in sponsoring visas as a lot of other companies. The possibility to work from home is also a great factor.

How did you find the recruitment process? Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programmes?

The recruitment process is way less stressful than I expected. The interviewers were all very friendly and accommodating. The advice for students applying for SSE graduate programme is just be yourself during the interviews, you're never expected to know everything applying for a graduate programme, but you will be the perfect candidate if you have the willingness and capacity to learn.

Tell us a bit about your experience on the graduate programme, including any placement highlights and opportunities.

I moved around different teams within the business, which has helped me a lot with gaining experiences from different aspects in the industry. I have worked on Hydro, Offshore and Onshore wind projects. I have also been offshore on the Jack-up Vessel which was very exciting. This is a very flexible graduate programme in which you can choose the placements that fit your ambitions yourself.

What are you doing now?

Since completing the graduate programme, I have joined the Offshore Project Engineering and Marine Team as a project engineer. As a project engineer, we have to have all-rounded knowledge about all the Engineering activities of the project, and the graduate scheme placements have prepared me with experiences from all around the company.

Awais Bhatti - Engineering Graduate

Joining SSE Renewables as an engineering graduate

Awais talks about his experiences of the graduate programme so far as well as sharing some hints and tips about the application process.

First, tell us a bit about yourself! What did you study at university? Where are you based, and did you relocate for the grad programme?

I’m Awais Bhatti, an SSE Renewables graduate Engineer based in Glasgow. I joined the company in September 2023. I graduated from The University of Strathclyde with a degree in Naval Architecture & Ocean engineering. I live near Glasgow, so I usually just commute by train to get to the office which is based in the city centre.

Which sectors did you consider applying to for your graduate role? What made you choose SSE Renewables?

As part of my degree, we learned about offshore renewable energy and how important it was for future generations. After graduating I started looking for careers with companies that produced cleaner energy and had goals for future development. I was impressed with the work SSE were doing and the vast projects which would be added to their portfolio. I also felt at comfort as SSE were offering a safe, inclusive and diverse working environment.

How did you find the recruitment process? Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programmes?

I found the SSE recruitment process to be positive and very well structured. Like any recruitment process it was challenging and extremely competitive, however, what I liked most was the communication from SSE at each stage, it felt very inviting and made the process feel more relaxed allowing me to show my personal and academic interests.

If you’re considering applying for the SSE Graduate scheme, I would recommend researching SSE’s company values and goals and learn in detail about what the company is working towards. I would also recommend doing practice tests online to best prepare for the real one. During the interview stage it is important to ‘be yourself’, SSE want to know you as a person, not just your academic achievements.

Tell us a bit about your experience on the graduate programme?

The best thing about the graduate scheme is that it allows you to do placements across the wider business. I have spent time in Offshore Wind, Onshore Wind and Solar & Battery working on a variety of different tasks and objectives, from substructure analysis to commercial investment modelling.

I’ve really enjoyed travelling the UK for site visits which allows you to get practical knowledge and first-hand experience rather than being stuck in an office. I’ve also enjoyed the team days which gives you an opportunity to meet new colleagues and expand your network.

Eyimofe Oma-Wilkie - IT Graduate

The life of an IT graduate at SSE

Eyimofe shares his experience on the IT graduate programme so far and talks about what other career he dreamed of pursuing...

First, tell us a bit about yourself! What did you study at university? Where are you based, and did you relocate for the grad programme?

My name is Eyimofe Oma-Wilkie, a graduate at SSE Plc. I’m the third child from a family of 5 and in some alternate dimension, I’d like to think that I’m a successful musician. I joined the Corporate IT Graduate Programme at SSE in September 2023, and I am currently based in Reading.

What did you study at university?

For my first degree, I studied Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Covenant University, and for my Masters, I studied computer Forensics & Cyber security at the University of Greenwich. I finished my Masters programme at the University of Greenwich in September 2023.

Which sectors did you consider applying to when you were looking at graduate roles?

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been interested in computing and IT, and in an earlier role, I worked in financial services and saw first-hand how anyone could become victims of cyber fraud. This spurred my interest in cyber security and led me to learn more on the subject. I also worked in a role that sought to provide credit to renewable energy customers and projects in Nigeria.

I considered applying to IT roles, primarily focused on cybersecurity, with employers who have a direct positive impact on society. I applied to SSE, because of its strides in energy transition to renewable energy and because it provided an opportunity to work in an inclusive and diverse workplace.

How did you find the recruitment process? Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programmes/Summer Placements?

Job recruitment processes can be quite arduous and demanding; they test your determination and resilience, and SSE’s was no different. I found it to be quite challenging and very interesting, as I got to learn more about the business and its operations. It started with an online form as most applications do and progressed to an aptitude test, followed by a video interview(response) stage, and finally an assessment day, which tested our culture fit and non-technical skills.

My advice to prospective applicants is to gain an understanding of SSE's business operations and core values, and to consider how your interests, skills, and career path align with these factors. Furthermore, don’t feel intimidated by the process, or the size of the business, as everyone here started where you are, with no work experience as well.

Tell us a bit about your current role, what you’ve learnt and what you’ve enjoyed most?

My current (second) placement is within the OT Security Operations Team of SSE Renewables. I work as a security operations analyst tasked with monitoring our assets for suspicious activity and assisting the team in making sure our OT operations align with industry standards and the regulators’ policies. As someone more familiar with conventional IT security, this role has enabled me to better understand the security requirements of Operational Technology & Industrial Control Systems. It has also given me an opportunity to work with various stakeholders across SSE Renewables.

Are you working towards any professional qualifications?

I’m currently working towards attaining 2 certifications, which are

CompTIA CySA+

AWS Solutions Architect Associate

Since joining SSE, I have gotten a Pluralsight licence, which gives me access to online labs, lessons and exam prep material from experienced tutors and professionals. I am also aware that as an SSE employee I can request for support for external training courses, including training and exam fees.

Ariana Gao - IT Graduate

Becoming an IT graduate with SSE

Ariana talks about her experience so far on the SSE IT graduate programme.

Tell us a bit about yourself! What programme did you join at SSE and where are you based?

I’m in the IT Graduate Scheme and I joined SSE in 2023, based in Reading.

What did you study at university?

I majored in Psychology for my bachelor's degree at UCL and later studied MA Education as a postgraduate also at UCL. I worked as a Product Owner for half a year before I joined the Graduate Scheme at SSE.

Have you had the opportunity to work in different business areas?

There were plenty of placement opportunities available in the different business areas such as Thermal, Distribution, Renewables and Enterprise as well as opportunities in Corporate IT. I personally had a placement in Enterprise and another in Energy Customer Solutions and I am about to have my third placement in Renewables.

How did you find the recruitment process? Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programmes/Summer Placements?

I enjoyed the recruitment process as it offered a lot of useful information to help me get a better understanding of SSE, including its vision, the strategies and the highlights in the graduate scheme program. When going through the introductory videos and the questions in the video interview, I really had a chance to reflect on how my past experiences can contribute to a greener future and how SSE may enable me to develop further in gaining knowledge and improving skills.

My advice for students would be to go through the reports, news and different public contents on SSE’s website to understand the vision and what it is currently working on to achieve the goals. It is also helpful to think about how you would contribute in the transition to net zero and what you wish to learn during the program.

Tell us a bit about your current role, what you’ve learnt and what you’ve enjoyed most?

I’m currently working as a Conversation Designer in the UX designer team. My main responsibilities include mapping out conversation logics for our Chatbot to accurately answer customers’ questions, reviewing website contents on the Help and Support page to help customers easily allocate information as well as ensuring the content quality meets the requirement for training the Chatbot. The placement strengthened by ability to work as a small team and built up my project management skills with different projects going on at the same time and my communication skills with various teams as well as the customers. My highlight in the placement would be the customer-centred perspective that I built up in the past 6-month from conducting usability tests with actual customers and reviewing customer engagement with the Chatbot. In addition to working on my placement, I took the Microsoft Learning courses in my free time and passed the test for Power BI certification.

Are you working towards a professional qualification?

I always hope to develop further in Product Ownership from a systematic perspective. In the last placement, I completed the Agile Product Ownership training with QA. It is a third-party training that SSE employees could sign up for when they opt in for a learning pathway. The 3-day training really shaped my understanding for the role and provided useful suggestions on techniques that a PO could use in everyday work when interacting with stakeholders. I signed up for another training provided by QA called the Agile Team Facilitation which will equip me with knowledge on how an agile facilitator works and the effective toolkits. Apart from these training sessions in partnership with third-party providers such as QA, there is also a buddy/mentor for each graduate who will be there to support in everyday work life and provide suggestions or connections when needed. I also received many helps from a senior business analyst and a senior product owner/manager who were willing to do 1-1 sessions to share their past working experience and knowledge. In a nutshell, there are a lot training and learning opportunities within and out of SSE and people around you will always be happy to help out.

Andrew Peoples - Engineering Graduate

Becoming an engineer with SSE Renewables

Andrew completed the SSE Renewables engineering graduate programme and is now a mechanical engineer with the business. Find out more about his career journey.

First, tell us a bit about yourself! What did you study at university? Where are you based, and did you relocate for the grad programme?

I’m Andrew Peoples and have recently completed the 2-year SSE Renewables Engineering Graduate Programme. I studied a 5-year integrated Masters in Mechanical Engineering with Aeronautics at the University of Strathclyde, graduating in 2021. I’m based in Glasgow and joined SSE in September 2022, having worked for a defence company for the year prior.

Which sectors did you consider applying to for your graduate role? What made you choose SSE Renewables?

During my latter stages on university, I had a keen interest in the renewables industry, with my group masters thesis focusing on the development of a marine turbine. I also chose classes in my 5th year, and completed internships through my years at Strathclyde, that were relevant to a career in renewables. After a short stint in defence after finishing my degree, a career in renewables was what I was after, and SSE Renewables seemed like a great place to start due to the scale and variety of projects.

How did you find the recruitment process? Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programmes?

The recruitment process is split up into a number of stages and each one is competitive to get through. The online tests are challenging so my main bit of advice would be to practice as much as possible before doing the real thing. After you get through the test stage, there is an online interview, presentation and assessment centre. At each of these you will be able to get across your personality, passion and motivation for joining the company much more. When attending interviews, it’s really important to know abut the company and what we are doing, so I would also say a big bit of advice would be to research projects and get to know some of the challenges SSE Renewables are facing, and some of the achievements we have reached.

Tell us a bit about your experience on the graduate programme?

During the graduate scheme I completed 3-month placements in 8 different teams across the 2 years. I spent time in onshore wind, offshore wind and hydro, all of which had different challenges and led to me getting involved with lots of interesting projects. A highlight for me was my 2nd placement, which was site based and led to me relocating to Shetland to work on Viking Wind Farm for 3 months. I worked on the site during the construction and installation phase of the project which was a great experience to witness firsthand how a wind farm in build, and all the challenges that come with it.

For those who have completed the programme – tell us about your substantive post and how the graduate programme helped you prepare for this?

After completing the graduate programme, I have since moved into my substantive role as a Mechanical Engineer within the Offshore Mechanical Engineering Team. During my time on the graduate programme, I completed a placement within the team and also worked alongside the team on other projects throughout the 2 years. I found the blend of technical work and interfacing with OEMs interesting which led me to pursuing a role within the team.

Ross Craig - Engineering Graduate

Why I chose to be a renewable engineering graduate

Ross is an engineering graduate at SSE Renewables. Hear what he had to say about his journey so far and what he thinks of the engineering graduate programme.

First, tell us a bit about yourself! What did you study at university? Where are you based, and did you relocate for the grad programme?

I studied an integrated Masters degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde.

I’m based in Glasgow and have been all my life.

Which sectors did you consider applying to for your graduate role? What made you choose SSE Renewables?

Through university, I’d always leaned more to the electrical side of my degree, focussing on renewables, networks, power studies etc. In my latter years of my degree, I decided to focus more on renewable subjects as I felt this was an ever-expanding industry due to our push for Net Zero. I had considered applying to consultancies but felt the work there would only get me involved in one stage of a project – I wanted to be somewhere where I could get involved across all stages ranging from initial design to operations of assets. I felt this would provide me with a greater depth of knowledge. I chose SSE Renewables over other grad schemes as I really liked the idea of being able to choose the placements I wanted to go to and for how long I wanted. This was something that wasn’t offered in the same way with other companies. I feel this really lets me take control of my career and how I develop as an engineer.

How did you find the recruitment process? Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programmes?

The aptitude test at the beginning of the process were the hardest part. There are several useful websites with practice tests available so my advice would be to practice the various types of questions that may come up to best prepare yourself. The following stages allow your personality to show through video interviews and presentations. I’d also say to do general research into the company about current projects, facts and figures. Showing your interest in the business goes a long way in the interview process and can be really helpful when answering questions.

Tell us a bit about your experience on the graduate programme?

I’ve been on 4 placements now – 2 onshore placements and 2 offshore placements. I’ve been able to see a vast amount of projects SSE Renewables work on, along with the incredible teams that help make these projects possible. The highlight for me across all my placements has been able to get on site visits. Most recently, I got to go offshore up at Beatrice Offshore Wind Farm to assist with cable inspections, where I also got to appreciate the incredible work that goes into getting these projects operational.

Personally, I feel I’m able to understand far more when I’m standing next to a transformer or circuit breaker than looking on a diagram. Every team I’ve been in has really encouraged getting to site and learn, and I feel I’m a better engineer for it.
